Chuffed to be reissuing one of the greatest cult death metal demos of all time! Necro Schizma were arguably the first band to play properly slow death metal.

They took “Triumph Of Death” as a template (it’s covered here), and the songs on this demo are essentially variations on that very basic theme; played incredibly primitively at snail’s pace.

This is rough-sounding stuff, and shows little musical flair at all, but for me this is an absolute godhead of early extreme metal and encapsulates everything those early scenes were about: paying homage to your heroes (the cover is even just photocopied from the sleeve of the first Angel Witch 7″!), recording and releasing music yourself with a distinct aesthetic, and capturing an atmosphere that is almost impossible to do nowadays.

This demo has been re-released a few times in the past few years on vinyl and CD, but I don’t think the artwork has come close to doing the justice of capturing the original home-made aesthetic in any way at all. This tape reissue is based on my own original copy of the tape and (I hope!) is a near-exact replica of the original. It suits the cassette format PERFECTLY, with tons of obliterating low-end and scuzzy, basement fidelity. Maintain the sanctity of the classics!

ATWAR201NECRO SCHIZMA – Live Emerloord 25-8-1990 tape

Companion to the classic of rough, slow death metal, this live set (recorded supporting ASPHYX) is even rougher and even slower than it’s parent album!

Back in the late 80s/early 90s these poorly-recorded demos/live sets were being traded about all over the shop using soaped stamps, communications of what was going on in various scenes, and constantly updated lists of cool new shit people had acquired. It’s entirely the essence of that scene that my entire label and way of working is based around, cos I feel that we’ve lost something really special with the dawn of such easy communication.

Musically, this is a tough listen, no doubt about that! If you’re used to rough live recordings then it’s really not too bad, and the two songs on here that aren’t on the demo make it worth the entry price alone. An essential snapshot of a forgotten ghost.

ATWAR202NORMAL MAN – City Livin’ LP

Released: Sep ’19





Sloppy, dirgey punk from Leeds here. I guess the closest analogue would be Kilslug/Groinoids, being as they similarly trawl greasy depths of grot both musically and lyrically.

There’s a real sarcastic snidey tone to everything here and lyrically it’s fucking class (“I Will Let You Wank Soon”, “Get Big, Do Some Weights”); Poundsavers tales of tracky bottoms, Aldi’s own brand fizzy juice, recorded in a manky wee flat above a Presto’s.

Kinda like an even more retarded later Flag, there’s moments of crawling Sabbath-dirge metal and driving dirge punk; opener “I Drink Piss” totally brings to mind the last line-up of The Fall, and this is the closest thing I’ve heard to successfully take the piss out of shit British culture since MES.

Extra points to possibly the best cover art of any record I’ve ever released. My nephew was in the house when I got the box of records home and now there’s a four year-old wee boy with a muscley Sonic the Hedgehod/granny guy getting stabbed by an egg-heided duck on his bedroom wall.

ATWAR197REGEN GRAVES – The Cruelty Of Hope tape

Released: Apr ’19





Regen Graves is frontman with Italian horror-doomers Abysmal Grief but this, this solo work is completely different in terms of one and style.

Often the “solo project” concept can be a bit hit-or-miss, and there have been plenty of half-arsed drone/soundtrack/acoustic guitar disasters in the past from people who I otherwise considered flawless. This record is indeed a depature in style, but feels to me to be more overtly personal in sound and theme.

Inspired by the works of Krzystof Kieslowski, the haunting analogue synth tones here bring the post-modern isolation of his series Dekalog. There’s a vagely sci-fi sound and a lot of it is very abstract, which at its best moments brings to mind the more ambient works by the all-time master, Maurizio Bianchi. There’s a vaguely organ sound creeping in sometimes which betrays Regen’s day job, and also reminds me of another Italian masterpiece, Paul Chain’s criminally ignored epic, Opera Decima.

ATWAR198DOLORE – L’Orrendo Spettacolo Della Morte tape

Released: Apr ’19





New one-man project from Italy here, which is apt as the Italians are the undisputed masters of true macabre art! Italy’s long been my personal fulcrum for horror cinema, scores and music and Dolore does an excellent job of paying homage to the masters!

Dolore’s music is mostly instrumental (there are incidental vocal lines for effect) and is very much in the early 80’s synth vein which is de rigueur at the moment. Not really riding the wave of more mainstream synth-wave kinda stuff or retro-cool-Drive-soundtrack guff, this is a more gritty and less polished take, but the tunes are still ultra-memorable. Fans of the Repeated Viewing tape I put out will absolutely love this!

Giorgio comes from a metal background, serving time in Undead Creep, Haemophagus, but he definitely gets the score (pun intended) with what this kinda gear is all about

ATWAR187K2 – Tekhnodrug CD

Released: Apr ’19





Reissue of a long-lost tape from 1993 here. K2 has long been at the fore-front of Japanese noise and is known for his harsh, collage style.

This record isn’t an all-out harsh-fest in that way that contemporaries like Hijokaidan are, but is very varied in sound. There’s creeping synth tone, screeching feedback, piercing blasts of white noise, rumbling static. Compositionally there are long periods of coherence, with an almost musical sensibility, but these are often brought to a shattering halt by a blast of ear-splitting noise.

It’s a real honour to be able to be part of getting this essential early material out there. And for it not to be edited to within an inch of its life, given shit cover art and released as a 20 quid “luxury” LP on Urashima.

I’ve been a big fan of pretty much every band Andy Morgan does for absolutely years now, and I’m absolutely chuffed to be putting out a record with him. In is commonly the case (and I dunno what it says about me), he chose his most caustic, horrible project yet to bring me into the fold, and it fits the At War MO perfectly!

Two tracks of raw, improvised-in-the-studio dirge punk here which takes their harsh, corrosive sound and lets it run into some pretty wild places through repetition that constantly feels like it’s teeering on the edge of total implosion.

This is noise rock at its most raw; with distant, lost vocals and a dissonant, disjointed atmosphere. I can’t recommend it enough.

ATWAR121SATAN’S SATYRS – Wild Beyond Belief! CD

Combining the super-fuzz garage sensibilities of Davie Allen And The Arrows and the catchy riffing and keen sense of songwriting of the “new” Electric Wizard, Satan’s Satyrs have injected a youth breath of fresh air into the oft staid confines of the crypt of underground metal this past year or so through a series of ultra-limited singles and EPs. Wild Beyond Belief! is the first full-length and delivers on the promise of those early demos and then some.
I got chatting with Clay of SS a wee while back over a mutual love of late 60s biker movies, and they really form the basis of this record; from the artwork and the lyrics (“Ride Devils, ride, ride Sadist 69!”) to the lo-fi recording sounding like it could’ve come straight from a greasy backstreet Grindhouse showing Hell’s Angels On Wheels. There are no boring “drone” elements here, there’s no chin-stroking/beards anywhere in sight, and the exploitation schlock element has a firm basis rather than some clown who watched Susperia cos Electric Wizard said they liked it and Googled “occult flares lol” in search of an album cover. It’s just TUNES and ATTITUDE. Right on!

1000 copies on CD, just discovered a box of these. Grab yerself a bargain of an ORIGINAL COPY of this release and not a snide reissue like what Bad Omen put out WHILE IS STILL HAD COPIES OF THIS FOR SALE.

ATWAR177NAZI KILLER – Nazi Killer 7″

Utterly fuckin INTENSE hardcore here. The name might give it away: there are definite Infest vibes going on. Every song is a total short, sharp, shock with most clocking in at under 30 seconds and some of the most spare and to-the-point lyrics since Hear Nothing. There’s a real thick, beefy but rough production that takes it into near-power violence territory at times. The vocals are absolutely RAGING and the singer looks like George Eastman from Anthropophagus The Beast but even more fucking mental.

As with Mangle (who, along with the excellent Nothing Clean provide membership for these guys) I was utterly blown away upon hearing Nazi Killer. In fact, I was sold on the name alone. Who cannae get behind Nazi killing? This is as full-on as you can get and suited perfectly to the 7″ format. GETTIT!

Had a bit of a mare with this one…..more than half my copies came in warped to fuck and we’re chasing the pressing plant tog et replacements….so all the other labels have had it out for months, so I’ve decided to put my useable copies up for sale and hope the plant comes through and sends me ones that actually play.

ATWAR173HEADLESS KROSS – Projections I LP

Released: Feb ’19




REPRESS!!! The first in a trilogy of limited edition vinyl LPs from Glasgow’s Headless Kross, Projections I finds them regressing a bit from the spacey out-there psych doom of Volumes, taking the bull by the horns, then tearing its heid right off with the savage caveman riffing of …Does Not Equal Time.
The record doesn’t give much space to breathe at all on the first side; Practical Mental Effects is a total smothering, ultra-heavy fucker and maybe the most brutal thing they’ve done so far.
Church Of The Fifth Season feels like the album’s centrepiece and offers a nice bit of respite; opening with a good few minutes of feild recordings and samples, bubbling under a power electronics sound that could’ve been lifted straight out an early 80’s Broken Flag tape. This gives way to a much more expansive tune than the two found on the first side, and it’s an absolute belter.
The Map Is Not The Territory closes the album and is built around repetitive, cyclical riffing with some lovely spacey, bluesy solo guitar over it that reminds me loads of when Boris used to be ace.
I find most sludge/doom/stoner to be totally fuckin boring if I’m honest but Headless Kross have been at this game a long time and know the score. Very chuffed to be working with such a top local band and can’ wait to get the other two volumes of this series out there!

ATWAR195LEGION OF ANDROMEDA – Fistful Of Hate LP

Second full-length from At War stalwarts and greatest friends LOA!

While single-minded bludgeon and distinct lack of progression is almost Legion’s MO, this album is pretty distinct in the fact that it is pretty different from their first record, released several years ago now. The production definitely is miles away from the clarity and raw heaviness of Steve Albini’s on Iron Scorn; this one is like a kinda thick gargling spew forcing through the grill of yer speakers: the guitar is a total thick mucky dirge and vocals are hidden under layers of ultra distortion, pinned by the relentless monotony of the bass drum. The only sound that has much definition is the “ting” of the drum machine cymbal every four beats. It’s fucking cool.

Recruited here to add more grot is Finnish master of perverse noise Bizarre Uproar, and tracks are held together with his torture chamber ambience and creeping layers of dread.

In keeping with the kinda minimalist/maximalist dichotomy at the heart of the LOA manifesto is stark white identical front and back artwork and garish static inner sleeves which induce as much of a brain-collapse as listening to the tunes does.

There’s no obvious start or end to this record, there are no atmospheric intros of codas at the end. There’s nothing, there’s Fistful Of Hate, then there’s nothing again. When it ends you have a kinda empty feeling wondering why you put yourself through it all, like at the end of that last series of Twin Peaks. Am I fucked? Is the world fucked? What’s the point? Fuck off.

ATWAR191OMMADON – End Times LP

Released: May ’18





First new album in two years and it’s been worth the wait. Ommadon have long been amongst the fore-runners of the new wave of british heavy, and this for me is probably their most fully-realised album yet.

A couple of years ago I went on tour with Ommadon and Legion Of Andromeda and it was one of the most fun fortnights I’ve ever had. Ommadon played a version of this lengthy song each night and it got better and better as the gigs went on. I think that’s really what the kinda music they play is all about: it doesn’t yield its secrets easily. It’s not immediate, and it takes repeated listens to maybe even properly enjoy it, never mind become immersed in it. “Drone doom” or whatever you wanna call this stuff, it seems really easy to do: you just need a really big amp, right? Well I guess that’s like saying any cunt with a keyboard could play Phaedra. Gie it a go!

End Times at once both slowly unravels and envelops; it’s all about build-up, crashing dramatic release, tension and atmosphere. Or, I guess as most reviews will inevitably just say: IT’S HEAVY! DOOOOOOM! But it’s not just about being heavier than everyone else. The composition is absolutely key here: the building layers of sound, the melodic undercurrents, almost black metal buried guitar lines, sparse gruff vocals, shifting tempos…..they’re much more than just “find a decent heavy riff and play it for 45 minutes”.

I’m chuffed that after seeing these guys play this material so many times they’ve asked me to be involved in putting it out, and I’m double chuffed because they’re amazing fellas who totally get the DIY ethic and just generally know the score about stuff, being on my wavelength without being as much of a gobshite as I am. I fuckin love Ommadon, and so should you.

ATWAR184VUIL – Hell CD

Released: Apr ’18





New EP (when it comes out on vinyl it’ll be a 12-er so it’s not a “mini-album”; these things are important) from Scotland’s best metal band.

Vuil have been going through a metamorphosis with each release and this record to me feels like the moment at which they’ve found their sound fully. The root sound is 80s speed metal, early thrash, NWOBHM, but every tune is imbued with a strong late 70s/early 80s hard rock swagger: you can tell they dig Dokken, Van Halen, Scorpions, Schenker et all. That said, the shrieked vocals, fast pace and riffs of total destruction will have you forgiven for thinking that Slayer recorded an immediate follow-up to Show No Mercy that never came out at the time.

I love this band and they’re absolutely everything that At War is all about. There’s no bullshit about them, they work hard, and they are total punk as fuck. I often think the metal scene in the UK is a London-centric fancy dress poser-fest if I’m honest and these guys are the antidote to that.

ATWAR186HEAVYDEATH – Den Tunga Doden: Anthology 2xCD

Released: Apr ’18





Epic compilation here from one of the heaviest bands going around right now. Heavydeath became know in underground circles for the prodigious amount of demo material they would hit out with; taking ideas and crafting them into a unified, coherent heavy metal of death.

This huge double CD comp gathers a huge amount of this stuff and gives the best introduction to this great band anyone could get, showing the full range of what they can do: creeping, almost ambient intros, full-on early death metal inflected grotesque reveries, or even fist-banging viking metal-style ragers. The band have their own really unique sound, though. At base I guess it reminds me loads of Apocalyptic Raids-era Hellhammer, but it’s more muscular and has a superb driving quality about it that I absolutely love.

Comes in a great chunky double CD digipak with a booklet incorporated. 500 copies, co-released once again with Dying Sun.

ATWAR181BLESSED REALM – Doomography 1993-2003 CD

Released: Jul ’17





Blessed Realm were a doom band who originated around the time of what a lot of people might call the “golden age” of the British doom scene. The early 90s were a fruitful time for doom metal, and in the wake of the famous Saint Vitus/Cathedral tour and the “big three” of Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, tons of death metal bands discovered Witchfinder General and slowed down their recycled Massacre riffs by half.

The first few tracks on this collection come from their first demo, which to me is their best material (probably cos a dub of this demo was the first thign I ever heard by them!). It’s great, ultra-mournful and minimalistic doom metal, but with a superb ear for a melody. I love the buried and sorrowful vocals. This is what DOOM sounds like.

The next demo represented here is the Chasing The Dragon demo, which is still proper heavy doom but a wee bit more upbeat, and which maybe suffers a wee bit from a drum machine instead of live drums.

“Return To Zero” is maybe their most well-known and widely-distributed demo, and by this point (1998) the band were full-on doom rock. I guess stoner rock was in full flow at this point and this material reminds me of the great (and forgotten) YEAR ZERO: relying less on heavy-duty slow riffs, the tunes on here are more up-tempo rockers in line with Trouble’s later stuff….they were definitely listening to loads of The Obsessed I reckon an all!

The final demo “Crawl” takes the doom rock idea even further and it’s a shame the album (slated for release on Miskatonic Foundation) never happened cos it could’ve been a belter. Luckily the band persisted in wanting this collection out there and thanks to Sealey of Iron Void it’s happened! Really chuffed to be involved with this and to lend my questionable expertise to proceedings.

Second (slightly delayed) entry into the live flexi series, this finds us digging out two old tracks from Japan’s premier EVIL METAL band.

These two tunes were recorded 12 years ago, with Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust on guitar. War 666 is a total Motor-charged bulldozer with rabid vocals.

Prophecy Of The Evening Star is a mid-paced rocker with a bit of NWOBHM swagger to it. Cracking riff.

ATWAR169SEDEM MINUT STRACHU – General Fucking 12″

Released: Jan ’17




I’ve been in touch with Rado of SMS for years through trading and chatting shite on the net, and he’s one of the most clued-up, cool guys I’ve ever come across in the scene. A few years ago I was hard up, had lost a ton of cash after getting ripped off pressing a disastrous record, and frankly done-in with wasting all my time and effort into the black hole that is running a DIY label, when out of nowhere came a package from Rado with a note: “here’s some stuff from my label, sell it and hopefully make a little bit of cash back!”.
Well, tear wiped from my normally glass eye, now he’s got a band on the go it’s time to repay a fucking ace human being by releasing their first full-length (!) recording, and what a belter it is!
If you’ve been paying any attention to noisecore in the past few years, Sedem Minut Strachu (Seven Minutes Of…..?) have been one of the main bands on the scene, releasing tons of split tapes and 7″s with a loads of bands. They’ve got a totally rehearsal room sound, but aren’t just total blurr-merchants. There are riffs going on here! Absolutely I can hear 80s grind as a massive influence. Maybe even some old death metal creeping its way in there too…Pungent Stench maybe?
This record comprises a ton of short blasts on the first side, and on the flip is ostensibly a free-form “jam” that has slow bits, fast bits, a mouth organ (!) and what sounds like an animal being run over by a lawnmower. For the last couple of minutes it even goes into lounge-jazz territory. It’s absolutely fuckin brilliant.
Noisecore is a genre that’s suited to the 7″ format foremostly in my mind, but at around ten minutes a side and varied enough to keep it interesting, this works just perfectly. Czech it out!

ATWAR163THE PROCESS – The Covenant Of The Cosmos LP

Released: Aug ’16




Another long-gestating LP here, and – as with most long-gestating LPs – it’s an absolute belter! The Process are made up of several veterans of Scotlands hardcore and punk scenes, but this record isnae a document of what some guys did in the other bands before so I’ll leave you to check that out for yourself. Here, the music speaks for itself!
“The Covenant Of The Cosmos” is the band’s final testament having split up some time ago, and has a tone of finality about it: a kinda hardcore gnostic death-toll. It’s a dense record, musically and thematically: lyrics deal with esoteric theology, cosmology, and Masonic symbology (I think….reading the lyrics results in a lot of further reading!); whilst the production is thick, textured and full.
The record definitely benefits from repeated listens; I’ve ben with it since pre-production and still finding bits here and there even now. It’s a multi-faceted and densely-layered record: you can tell the band have their roots in metal (there are a few great wee proper metal guitar licks going on, as well as the odd death grunt and break straight out of Sunlight Studios ’91) as much as hardcore. There are grindcore blasts coming from the same place that 30 seconds before was a cosmic lull, and relentlessly harsh vocals make way for an ethereal girl’s voice.
I’m really chuffed with this one. I’ve loved most of what these guys have come out with both as The Process and in previous bands, and they know the score on how things should be done! Their vision has been realised entirely due to their (and Kunal’s!) dedication, persistance, and singularity of artistic vision, and I’d like to think that’s pretty evident holding this in your hands and giving it a listen from start to finish.

ATWAR168REGLER – Regel #8 (Metal) CD

Released: May ’16




A new record by Anders Bryngelsson and Mattin’s exploratory project Regler, and where else could they release “Metal” but through At War?! Regler is all about musical reductionism: taking the bare elements of what constitutes a genre and decompartmentalising in what initially seems to be a pretty esoteric whole.

This chapter sees the guys taking on metal. I remember reading an interview with Masami Akita where he said he loved rock music but his favourite bit was at the end of performances where there was loads of feedback and noise and stuff getting wrecked, and that’s what drove him to make “noise”. This is a kinda vague variation on that.

“Heavy Metal” starts off with thundering drums that could be the intro to any stadium metal tune, but they keep going. And going. Over this is a wail of feedback and grandiose riffing, total heavy metal thunder. It changes pace, starts to chug along. It’s heavy metal, but not as we know it.

“Thrash Metal” is an altogether more abstract affair, but the snippets we hear probably bear more resemblance to the genre than the previous tune. It sounds like a thrash band are powering away in a sound-proof rehearsal space and somebody’s standing at the door, opening it for a couple of seconds at a time to record whatever madness is going on inside. For a form of music that’s characterised by jagged, sharp guitar work, this succeeds in at least the respect that the short, sharp blasts of noise could cut glass. Things soon get going and the affair becomes an avant free-for-all, percussion being abused and Flying V strings being torn asunder. Top notch.

The band’s take on “Black Metal” is a bizarre one (course it is), sounding a bit like Marduk playing while faling down a flight of incredibly high stairs. It bears little resemblance to the genre, though the drums are fast with plenty of hi-hat. There might be vocals in there, but I think they’re from a black metal recording being mixed in with the psychedelic free-form aural battery being created by the duo. It’s got quite an industrial sound, with the drums absolutely unrelenting and metallic clanging, scraping and a hazy fog of dissonant horrible noise pervading every moment of its 30 minute plus run time. CD version of the second full-length (amongst a gazillion demos!) from these great Swedes.
For me, Heavydeath succeed predominantly in managing to meld several styles without really sounding like anyone else, or of a particular time and place. Their songs are characterized by brilliant driving riffs that bring to mind “V”-era Saint Vitus, but everything is informed by a multitude of mainly late 80s/early 90s death and doom influences, with an almost gothy monotone combined with gruff barks, black metal melodic lead lines and crushing death/doom riffs.
The atmosphere here is key: dark, brooding and grim but it’s always listenable and never descends into boring death metal cliche. An absolutely great band who manage to keep the quality control up despite a prodigious release schedule.

ATWAR156MOSS – Carmilla (Marcilla)/Spectral Visions CD

THE RETURN of Britain’s best doom metal band, this wee EP saw Moss breaking the chains of their harsh oppressors and self-releasing a 10″. Aware that not everyone does vinyl (or can afford it!) I’ve stuck my oar in to do this nice CD version for a bargain price.

Moss haven’t as much as changed their sound through the years as much they’ve metamorphosed, and this record and their previous full-length, Horrible Night, are a distillation of the classic doom metal these guys clearly know the score about. The necrotic, abyssic guitar tone and thundering drums which characterised their early, droning funeral doom are still there, but at a more half-speed Sabbath pace than 16 rpm Sabbath pace.

There’s a claustrophobic, cloying atmosphere that in my opinion Moss do better than any other doom band around, but the two tunes here are proper head-bangers. Might be wrong but I hear tinges of the first PENANCE demo (which I consider to be one of the best doom demos ever by the way!) in here.

One of my favourite bands from the past decade or so and incredibly chuffed to be doing a record with them.

ATWAR154CLOCKED OUT – Clocked Out LP

After a few years here we have at last the full-length debut from Glasgow’s premier hardcore band! Clocked Out have been pounding the stage here and across the UK (and beyond!) for a wee while now and their performances are always absolutely 100% energy and intensity, and this record captures that perfectly.
Nine tracks of highly-charged, Clevo-style hardcore, pretty relentless stuff that never gives for a minute through its brief running time, letting up only for the odd mid-tempo guitar break. The riffs are great, the production is pummeling and the ultra-pissed negative lyrics are fucking superb. A great record that I’m proud to have been part of!

ATWAR115BONG – Bethmoora 2xLP

Released: December ’14




Bong’s debut full-length, this has been long unavailable and I thought it was long-overdue to see it come out on vinyl given recent reissues of their other records.
This is Bong as I remember them when they first started out; there’s a primitive, sparse and lonely sound to the first tune, “The Stone Mountain”. It’s almost a continuation of bass player/vocalist Dave Terry’s previous band – the masterful Trollman Av Ildtoppberg – and is a mysterious, stoned-out hymn to lost and forgotten spirits, resplendent with some wild 70s Japanese psych soloing.
Second track (and side) Bethmoora in contrast is an 18-minute stoner meditation: led by sitar this is total kosmiche music, proof that Bong are infulenced as much by the late 60s Krautrock scene (particularly Popol Vuh, Gunter Schickert, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream etc) as they are by Sleep and Hawkwind. Drop out!
Taking up an entire LP is their hypnotic cover of Pink Floyd’s “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun”; building up over the course of some 20 minutes from silence, it’s a masterful display of repetition and trance, with thunderous, booming vocals and white noise guitar solo wipeouts from Mike Vest. Genius!
Everything’s been remastered specifically for vinyl by Adam Richardson of Ramesses/11Paranoias and sounds the absolute business. Heavy duty.
Very chuffed to be doing this as Bong have been one of my favourite bands for many years now and I’ve known them all from putting them on and being down in Newcastle etc for many years, so it feels like it’s come full circle to get this out there!

This is a VERY expensive release to do so I very much appreciate all pre-orders. Don’t make me sell any of my own records again please! I realise that parting with your money some time before a release is a big thing to do so I’m trying something a bit new here, selling them a bit cheaper as a bit of a reward to those who have the faith in At War to deliver the goods!

ATWAR150DAWNRIDER – The Third Crusade CD

Third album from one of Europe’s most solid doom bands. Dawnrider of Portugal aren’t out to reinvent the hammer here, and to be honest, when I’m in the mood for DOOM METAL that is not what I want!
They play heavy, rocking doom with a nice bluesy edge and satsifying, fat production. Nice use of organ, particularly on single “Cry Of The Vampire”, which has a real Paul Chain/Death SS sound to it.
Europe never gave up on doom and Dawnrider remind me a lot of the bands coming out in the early 2000s like Violet Vortex and Well Of Souls, proudly holding the banner aloft! This one will most definitely appeal to fans of the last BLOOD FARMERS album, treading a very similar sound to the American legends.

Holy fuzz Batman! Here we go. Ragged Barracudas play some of the dirtiest, fuzziest swamp plues I’ve heard this side of the Broughtons. With a proper warm lo-fi tube amp sound, these guys have the tunes and just the right amount of eccentricity and weirdy-beardy not-quite-there about em to stand them out from the packs of snooze-inducing garage rockers.
The lazy drawl vocals sound like the singer’s in mourning (or perhaps the record’s playing at slightly the wrong speed) and it often sounds like the band haven’t quite decided if they’ve finished the jam, with another wild solo emerging from the mire of superfuzz. To mis-quote Dirty Harry: sure to blow your head cleeean awwwf!

At long last, the second full-length from the UK’s finest death metal band!

Bonesaw have been hard at it for a few years now and although there have been a slew of split releases in the past while, it seems quite incredible that this is only their second album! Playing as they do old school death metal, aficionados of the genre will be pleased to learn that on this record they are not breaking any new ground but instead treading once more the grim and filthy road paved years past by Autopsy, Death, Master and Massacre with a degree of skill and nuance unparralleled in much of modern death metal.

The tone is dirty, grimy, underground; the guitars have a total buzzsaw sound, underpinned by death-knell bass lines straight outta Retribution For The Dead. There are slow, doomy moments and there are fast, neck-breaking grinding parts too…all boxes ticked in the “old school death metal” checklist really. Any record that has the lyrics “take your crucifix and shove it up your arse” is always gonna get top marks, right?

ATWAR127UP YOUR BUCKET / SCREAMING BRAIN – Split 7″

Up Your Bucket are the new band from Big Daddy, drummer in one of my all-time favourite bands, KILSLUG! The two tracks on offer here are along similar druggy dirge punk lines but with a less lethargic delivery, almost reminiscent of Electric Wizard’s new driving, schlocky garage riffs. Some of the best stuff I’ve heard in ages, cannot wait to hear a full album by these guys!

Screaming Brain are from Macedonia and play a very off-kilter type of punk. It’s definitely been informed by later Black Flag and maybe some of the other oddball SST bands of the mid 80s but they have at their base a melodic euro-punk core with a couple o great singalong choruses.

A cracking split release and another belter on the “things to accomplish before you die” list crossed off by having cartoon genius Mike Diana do the artwork.

ATWAR130GRIMPEN MIRE – A Plague Upon Your Houses CD

After taking bloody ages to decide on how to do the packaging properly finally this record is ready to drop! Grimpen Mire are one of the finest heavy bands in the UK right now and came on to my radar several years ago when I saw them playing the 1 in 12 in Bradford. This is “sludge” in that it’s properly heavy and has tons of dissonance and screeching feedback, but these guys are from the “Sabbath home” of Birmingham and aim to hit you with the same bleak, grey life view that was so brilliantly captured on that opening toll of the first Sabbath record. There’s not a stoner riff, a groovy chorus or an “ooh yeah” anywhere to be heard here (thank fuck!), this is entirely dense, negative doom metal.
Taking the untouchable template of Winter, Hellhammer and Frost, slowing things down a bit (though there are a few pacy moments here) and turning it up past 11 with a real indutrial town mentality is what these guys are all about. It seems the downer doom bubble has popped and everyone’s taking on these current hard times by llstening to party riff bands, but I get the distinct impression Grimpen Mire don’t really give too much of a fuck about that.
Cast thyself down in prostration before the fulsome horror of…the Grimpen Mire!

ATWAR107FELLWOODS – Wulfram CD

    Released: Feb ’12

    Broadening the At War roster’s sonic palate further, Portland, Oregon’s Fellwoods give us a slab of bluesey, hard-edged rock with a great vintage 70s sound.
    I’m loathe to do so, but I’m sure these guys (formerly The Moss) will be lumped in with the current “retro-rock” revival, which includes some great bands, and some questionable bandwagon-jumpers. The major differentiator for me is the ability to just write a GOOD TUNE-unconsciously and without pretence-and Fellwoods most definitely do that!
    It’s very stripped-down, direct and raw blues rock which gives a heavy nod to the proto metal of the self-titled Bang LP, the first Sir Lord Baltimore record and even early Judas Priest (Rocka Rolla is an absolutely minsunderstood classic in my opinion). The vocals aren’t a million miles away from Halford early caterwaul either and fit with the sense of kinetic urgency throughout. There are some fantastic psychedelic spacey passages going on too,refelected in the beautfiful cover art by vocalist/guitarist Adam Burke.
    I’ll be doing a split 7″ with doom masters Ice Dragon soon, and these guys are away on tour with Uzala later on this year too; expect big things! You heard it here first.

ATWAR092OLD HEAD – Maximum Rock CD

    Here we go, start 2012 as we mean to go on! This is possibly one of the most atypical of At War releases so far in that it’s not got any experimental basis to it at all and well, it does exactly what it says on the tin: MAXIMUM ROCK. I kinda feel that AWWFN is my label and so it should reflect my tastes to a large degree, and so “more metal” may indicate the general trajectory the label is going in.

    Anyway, enough of the bullshit: Old Head are fucking great! Essentially this is grind maniacs TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION playing a great fusion of early 90s-style thrash and classic rock stylings, with the inimitable Megadan Tumelo on vocals. Just check the back cover of the CD: Dan has the HEAVY METAL comic logo tattooed on his arm: nuff said! Anyway: to the music. Old Head’s roots are most defiitely in 70s rock; the three covers on this record are testament to that: “Fat Man” by Jethro Tull, a refreshingly non-obvious Sabbath cover in “Rock And Roll Doctor” and my favourite, a thrash re-imagining of CSNY’s “Cut My Hair”. Maybe it’s the sentiment but that song is just a belter! OH have their own style though, and that is brilliant catchy riffs, superb tight-as-fuck drumming (Rich Hoak – you may have heard of him – his day job is to pound the skins in on the of greatest grind bands ever, Brutal Truth), great sing-a-long heavy metal choruses (as they should be!) and superb, really beefy production.

    This record basically had me feeling like I was a teenager again, and at a time when trends just seem to be dictating the music industry at a major level and in the underground, Old Head play what they like to play because they have to, and I am absolutely 100% behind that!

ATWAR101FORDELL RESEARCH UNIT – The Illusion Of Movement CD

Absolutely chuffed to be putting this out after talking about it for literally years. FRU is one of the absolute best drone bands not just in the UK but on the planet and over the past few years I’ve seen Fraser (and then Fraser and Grant) play some of the most dense, suffocatingly heavy drone noise time and time again that has only been surpassed by the untouchable Culver.
Lee Stokoe’s work is a good basis for comparison if you’re a FRU virgin and they tread similar sound-in-a-vaccum stasis and churning, crunching, collapsing-building noise as Gateshead’s finest. This band is a major force in its own right though and there’s a real foreboding horror movie atmosphere going on here.
Really glad to be bringing this band to a bigger audience and I just hope this leads to giving these guys the attention they so thoroughly deserve!

This is very different to Mike’s usual output and provides him with the perfect outlet for his singular, dark world view. Early industrial, punk, electro and noise are all references here and are tied together by Williams’ distinctive vocal style. This is some very dark stuff and definitely has the feel of Eyehategod even though it’s got a totally different sound. Reference points: (early) Skinny Puppy, Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Head Of David. Equal parts primitive industrial, noise and punk; most certainly their most fully-realised recording to date by some way.

ATWAR093REDRIGHTHAND – They Sang And Chanted For Hours, Then The Locked In Hundreds Set Themselves Ablaze CD

I’ve been involved in albums that have taken a long time to come out before (usually my fault) but this one takes the biscuit! Originally recorded in 2004 this record never saw the light of day and has until now been doing the rounds on the blog circuit and talked about in hushed veneration throughout the underground.
I’ve had this recording for about fie years now and it still sounds as utterly heavy as the first time I was blown away by it!
RRH played quite a bit in the UK and built up quite a name for themselves over the years, and this record is a perfect distillation of their sound: incredibly slow, interminably heavy and possessing an atmosphere of complete and utter despair that I don’t think has been matched since. For me, this record is probably the best document of the UK sludge/doom sound and should be held in the same regard as many others who have came and went since. The bands other members were in/went on to be in speaks for itself: vocalist Peet was in Hard To Swallow and Narcosis, Robbo went on to do They Are Cowards, Thomas and Paul were both in Charger and now play in Ocksen, and Paul Rauschen was in Like A Kind Of Matador and went on to At War’s own Gruel.
I’m very chuffed to be the label finally putting this out and opening it up to a bigger audience at long last!

This has been a long time coming and I promise the next installment (Mectypo/Blut since you ask) won’t take so long and should surface early next year. Both these albums are lofi, featuring very primitive use of synthesiser, tape loops and tape manipulation. There’s a real charm and otherwordly feel to them, There’s something very precient about MB’s explorations into the computer world with his sounds on these records, particularly given the nature of most modern noise music and how nobody still has managed to replicate the feeling of his early works with the technology available. As ever, highly recommended to all with an interest in noise music and its history.

Volume I in a series of UK / European / US and Japanese artists’ tributes to the pioneering UK Noise group The New Blockaders including exclusive tracks by: Nocturnal Emissions, Smell & Quim, Dieter Muh, Putrefier, srmeixner, Cheapmachines, Evil Moisture, Ashtray Navigations, Jazzfinger, Mutant Ape, Anomali, Halalchemists (incl. members of Skullflower, Culver, Snotnosed, Romance & Marzuraan)

“We are The New Blockaders. Blockade is resistance. It is our duty to blockade and induce others to blockade: Anti-books, anti-art, anti-music, anti-clubs, anti-communications. We will make anti-statements about anything and everything. We will make a point of being pointless.”

So read the 1982 manifesto of TNB. A group who, more than any other, define the essence of true Noise music both in art and in act. Their influence on the current crop of popular crossover Noise artists such as Prurient and Wolf Eyes is immeasurable. Emerging at the beginning of the 1980s alongside the Industrial grind of Throbbing Gristle and the harsh, abrasive Power Electronics of Whitehouse, TNB stood out through a purity of vision. Their first record, 1982’s ‘Changez Les Blockeurs’, is noise in its most rudimentary form: metallic grating sounds and analogue feedback redefined what could be classified as music. Its abstract form and Dadaist construction challenged all that had appeared before. Its anti-music approach presented a recording closer to the theory-driven work of Einsturzende Neubauten than their supposed contemporaries. They would appear rarely and when they did it would be in anonymity. The records would emerge even more infrequently with little information and in tiny runs. Collaborations in recent years with artists such as Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Merzbow have brought their anti-sound to a younger and diverse audience. The metal-bashing of K2, the awkwardness of Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, the density of Macronympha and the abrasiveness of Merzbow all owe something to the anti-music of TNB. They can truly be credited as pioneers of Noise music as we know it today.

This is the first in four unique albums of today’s most forward-thinking noise artists paying tribute to their masters. Expect further volumes across the globe in the coming months.

ATWAR052NOMA/REJECTAMENTA – Split CD

When I started doing the label this was what I always intended it to be: releasing great music by people from around here who need to be heard! Well, here ya go!
This CD combines two of Glasgow’s best experimental bands, neither of which really seem to get the credit or attention they deserve. John Comar AKA Noma has been wowing audiences for a few years now with his constantly changing live sets, a slew of CDr releases on various labels, and as an auxilliary member of metal powerhouse Black Sun, but this is his first “proper” CD release. He takes on two tracks here, the first is a slowly-building tone-fest. Very ambient, and hauntingly beautiful…bascially what Noma does best. Next track “Amusia” is a little atypical of what most people will expect. Imposing thuds are interjected by what sounds like some form of screeching metallic machine being thrown down some stairs, electronic blasts. Surreal, bizarre, unpredictable….very Noma.
This is only the second ever release by Adam Cresser’s Rejectamenta, and his one track here, “SSilence” is a follow-up to his CDr on At War from a couple of years ago entitles SServant. This couldn’t be any further away from silence, total overload of a billion circuit-bent instruments all melded together into one massive orchestral binary cacophany. Lovely hooks come here and there, the whole thing takes a few listens just to figure out what the hell is going on, great stuff.

ATWAR042MIKE PAGE – Mike Page CD

Released: October ’08

First “solo” album from the incomparable Mike Page, he of Fire In The Head, Sky Burial etc etc. When I got sent the original cut of this record he put a note in saying something like “Here’s my new record…no PE, no ambient, JUST NOISE”. Whilst this IS a departure from a lot of what he’s known for, it would be a travesty to describe this as JUST noise. What you get here is one lengthy plunge into the depths of carefully-constructed aural extremity, utterly loud and heavy as fuck and utilising as many extremes of tone that your poor lugs can take! Sometimes it all goes a bit quiet and you think there’s going to be an extended period of aural respite…until some shrieking high-end comes in and blows away any idea of shelter from the onslaught.
I was really disappointed when Mike announced he was giving up F/I/T/H but if he keeps up this level of intensity and sheer bloodyminded bludgeon the future’s bright.

ATWAR021MARZURAAN – Five Years Of Fuck All CD

    Released: Feb ’08

    At last!!! We’ve had this one brewing for months now and it’s well worth the wait! What started off as a small run of CDrs has become At War’s most ambitious release to date, and I’m totally fucking chuffed by it!!! This collection comprises demos, live stuff, rarities and rehearsals from the UK’s most consistently interesting, forward-thinking, and just plain fucking great band of the last decade. Starting off from now and moving backwards through time to the early bedroom demo days, this CD shows Marzuraan’s evolution from simplistic droning minimalism of the two bass lineup to the full-on rock beast of today.

    The album kicks off with a cover of Loop’s “Afterglow”, putting it through the post-Ginn blender and coming out with something great. The other cover here is a raging, lo-fi recording of Rollins Band’s “Turned Inside Out”, performed at the inaugural Glasgow Implodes fest a few years ago. There’s a fierce, noise-ridden performance of “Nice Wang” that I think I recorded on Julian Cope’s last tour (crowd (un)reaction the MZ was hilarious), the epic dark drone rock of GMT recorded at the Lord Clyde in Byker, and the aptly-named Kraut-esque monotone riff of “Earth 3” from the confusing Manbyrd cassette.

    All in all, Marzuraan do it better than anyone else going right now; be it bleak minimal droning walls of sound, controlled experiments into feedback or baws-out “post” rock, without the scene points. They sound like the late, twisted Flag stuff on a mid-period Voivod album, with Swervedriver on in the background. Played by Helios Creed. Or maybe I just talked a load of bollocks, fuck knows! Buy this record, dickhead.

    Totally great packaging by the guys at Thumbprint Press (HUGE thanks to WT for all the effort put into this, and Pete for artistic vision!); three-panel chipboard sleeve, double-sided print, with stark black letterpress and clear varnish. You may know these guys’ work from the Sunn live album or one of the many Bastard Noise family releases, but this tops the lot in my opinion! Top banana.

ATWAR022ZARACH’BAAL’THARAGH – ETERNAL DARKNESS CD

    New collection of long out-of-print demos from the French master of bedroom black metal, ZBT! This is totally raw stuff, utterly devoid of production values and often, song structure. This disc comprises some of ZBT’s more considered, “musical” demos, from the repetitive dirge of “Primitive Era”, the unrestrained wail and incoherence of “Apocalypse” to the thrash-esque precise riffing of “El Borak”. While this is often a difficult listen, the riffs are fucking great – opener “In Your Grave” is total Vulcano/Sarcofago-style South American-influenced filth – and the underground attitude and amateurish sound contributes to the true black metal atmosphere that so may lack these days. ZBT is obviously influenced by Les Legiones Noires, with jarring tremolo guitar, off-kilter production and is as mysterious and just plain weird as those bands were. For fans of bedroom BM like Striborg or cult LLN such as Mutiilation, Belketre etc.
    Classic B&W; art in tribute to the old masters! This is a full CD, NOT CDr.

Ohio’s SLOTH have been creating some of the most fucked up, weird, funny music of the past 10+ years and this is their first ever CD full-length album! Known for split records with bands such as Corrupted, Grief, Floor, Upsidedown Cross, Noothgrush etc etc, this album sees Sloth in a much more musically diverse frame of mind than usual. The painful sludge noise is still there but there’s an altogether more considered approach. There’s piano on it for fuck’s sake. Weird lo-fi songs that sound like they were written by a fucked up kid mix sit happily with garage rock high end jams and tar pit slo-mo doom dirges. The “13 samples” are bang on and the humour is as bizarre and hilarious as ever.

Very chuffed to be involved with this international (grind)core compilation. This release is kind of what it’s all about for me: a bunch of great bands, released in cooperation with a bunch of great labels throughout the world, and sold at a cheap price. No coloured vinyl, no “NO TRADES, WHOLESALE ONLY!”, no exclusive licence deals: just a whole CD’s worth of great underground music.
Everything here is exclusive to this release, and included here are: Violent Headache (Spain), Captain Three Leg (USA), Wadge (Canada), Iron Butter (USA), Rupture (Australia), Fossil Fuel (USA), Pantalones Abajo Marinero (Japan), Whoretorn (France) and Dysmorfic (Italy). A solid 80 minutes of fantastic underground metal, the highlights for me are the VH tracks (originally intended to be a split 12″ with Anticlerical in 1996), great all-over the place stuff from the impossible-to-pin-down Captain Three Leg, Wadge’s intense and unique brand of grind, a top bunch of savage Ozzy grind from Rupture’s sessions for the Brutal Truth split, and total retarded drum machine daftness from tardcore legends (and Sockeye project) Fossil Fuel. As At War enters into its third decade, it makes some sense that the first release of the 20’s would be a split between the most prevalent and long-running artist the label has on one side, and my best pal on the other!

Culver kicks off with a short, quite melodic piece of drone. The second track is also reasonably short and has an almost grinding mechanical sound over one long note. Third and final track, “No Way In” is the main draw, a 20 minute epic. Acoustic guitar is built up throughout and notes are layered and layered slowly on top, building to the most utterly ecstatic sound I’ve ever heard Culver create. It’s utterly uplifting and amongst his most accesible work.

“Accessible” isn’t a word you’d find synonymous with Matt Cooper’s guitar experiments but I personally think he creates some of the most singular and compelling experimental music around right now. I won’t go through each track as this record is very much meant to be considered in totality (even the tracks are just named “Part I-VI”. This is incredibly solemn music, with a real other-wordly air of claustrophobic tension to it. It works both as a companion-piece AND counterpoint to Culver’s side. Amazing as ever.

Debut release from Matt Cooper of Vom. Veneration Of Relics is made up entirely of layered solo guitar. It’s very dark and brooding stuff, with a particularly uncomfortable, almost cloyingly intense atmosphere throughout.

In my head this has at root a real gothic sound to it. That could be informed by Matt’s day job, it could be the reverb-ed guitar sound, or it could just be the very base, rudimentary dark sound he’s captured here. It comes across like some kind of waking fever dream had by Terry Riley.

Brilliant stuff and hopefully the first of many more to come.

Not long back from tagging along with both these bands on tour which was absolutely class, and chuffed to release a record with both of them on it! Two bands who are both incredibly heavy; coming from completely different sources but giving the same effect. Total bludgeon!
Ommadon gives us a massive epic drone. It begins like a Ramleh tune, buzzing and cavernous, before being consumed by claustrophobic tone. Riffs developing so slowly they’re just about going backwards, totally maximalist heavy metal. There’s no beat, no vocals. True friends of the Earth!
After nearly forty minutes of bass tones, Legion Of Andromeda burst forth with three blasts of utterly brain-ripping, spiked-glove-to-the-face extremity. The basic formula of their album is followed: bass drum/cymbal beat – riff – vocal and it’s still devestatingly effective. The recording here is much more in-the-red than on the album, feels like the cones of the speakers are taking serious punishment at even moderate volumes. Vocals here are absolutely ace too, absolute monstrous howls from the abyss.

The latest release from this power duo (I’ve just made up some music terminology there) is their best yet, and one I felt had to be on vinyl!

On their previous two records on At War, Regler have tackled harsh noise and heavy metal. Now I’m a big fan of both of these genres, and something I love equally is the blues. Regler doing the blues? What the fuck is that gonna sound like? Well, it doesn’t sound like Howlin’ Wolf, that’s for sure! But then, Anders and Mattin are less about representing a sound and more about getting to the bottom of a genre, usually by taking it apart, or getting to the fulcrum of the style….or in this case, aggressively smashing the shit out of it until it surrenders.

On one long track over two sides of an LP, Regler haven’t produced a deconstruction of the blues; rather a horrid bastardisation of the blues: playing an open riff and caveman drum beat over and over…..and over……..and over…….and over again, post-produced with samples representing the multitude of fucked up things going on in the world in the past year. It’s nearly an hour of unrelentingly bleak vibes. Is that not what the blues, in essence, is all about? The blues is – at root – reality, and this is what’s shown bare here. Is it more horrible to hear a seemingly endless, turgid cacophony of guitar and drums with little variation or finesse, or to hear the death, pain and suffering that we’re casually subject to at six o’clock every night with our egg and chips? Well, this record unsubtly asks that question!

The sound of the record is MASSIVE, and has been mastered beautifully to vinyl. Utterly heavy and taking no prisoners, it’s like the first track on FETO by Napalm Death just kept going for the whole album. This isn’t for the casual listener, but I guess if you’re a casual listener of anything you a) won’t be reading about a new REGLER record and b) won’t be on this website.

James McKay has been nicking about the Glasgow music scene for a few years now, where he’s known as the big hairy friendly vegan fella who booked gigs for the Note and now Nice n Sleazy. To the outside world he’s known as the big hairy friendly vegan fella who’s in wild psychers The Cosmic Dead and Discharge un-tribute act Thisclose. To me, he’s just a fuckin cool guy who I think is great and I’m really chuffed that after all this time we’re finally doing something together.

Anyway, enough about me publicly saying I fancy some character who’s better follicly-endowed than Chewbacca. Acid Cannibals is James and Fraser from excellent power violence ragers Droves and they make some of the most full-on, fist-in-the-air, uplifting, ROCK I’ve heard in ages. Like the great Pink Fairies tune, these guys get an idea and before they ruin it by thinking about it, they just DO IT, and the result is some totally exhilarating music charged with positive vibrations that make me wish I wasn’t such a cynical moaning-faced cunt most of the time.

It’s hard to get a touchstone for sound here cos it’s such a glorious mess, but if you dig Motorhead, Venom, the fast Hawkwind songs, the fast Monster Magnet songs, fuzz pedals, stoner rock without the boring bits, vocals with hunners of delay. If you want the proper experience, check these guys out live! Are We Metal? Doesnae matter, pal!

Absolutely astonishing debut from one of the best bands I’ve heard since starting this label. Legion Of Andromeda don’t reinvent the wheel…they more kinda take the wheel and use it as a primitive weapon to smash it into yer face repeatedly until it’s a bloody pulp.
This is stripped-back music as its most primordial. Each song is just one of two basic riffs, repeated over and over again; a simple pounding bass drum beat and inhuman animal growled vocals. It’s properly fucking HEAVY. You hear people calling music “brutal” and it almost never applies but this truly is savage, brutal, corrossive music.
The monotony renders it almost ridiculous, but the SOUND – thanks to a Steve Albini production – is utterly compelling and has to be heard to be believed. Truly believe this record is gonna be considered a true monolith in heavy music for years to come. GET IT HERE FIRST.

Great split EP from two of the HEAVIEST bands on the planet!

Legion Of Andromeda take their brutal, stripped back pummeling mix of industrial and death metal and across two lengthy tracks here up the barbarism significantly. The thing that really hits you here are the utterly unrelenting vocals: there’s almost no space in the music where there isn’t an ultra-distorted grunt. There’s little lyrical variance….songs are built up by a guitar riff, the drum beat (it’s the same sampled drum machine pattern – “the beat will never change”!) with a repeated lyrical phase growled, regurgitated, shrieked. LOA are TOO MUCH for a lot of people because well, they’re not ENOUGH. These people don’t have a fuckin clue. Perfect!

In many ways Bismuth are completely different to the cold, harsh sound of LOA. Their side-long tune here is epic, with a near-psychedelic off-kilter sub-bass heavy sound which brings “Epistemological Despondency” by Esoteric to mind. They counter the clinicism of LOA with a powerful, warm sound: there is something very organic….SEISMIC is maybe the better word, to Bismuth’s tone. Absolutely love it!

This was originally conceived as a vinyl release and if the other label can get the dosh together it still shall be! Cassette is a great format for ultra-volume releases like this though, so unjoy!

Brutal Blues are a relentless, mentally destabilising grindcore duo from Norway. I got their debut in a couple of years back in a trade with Selfmadegod and was instantly blown away, and it was probably my favourite record of 2014. I was absolutely chuffed when the band got in touch asking if I’d put it out, and more chuffed still when I heard this LP and it was even better than the debut!

This is real intense stuff: it’s a total whirlwind barrage of riffs and power drumming, start-stop rhythms and jangling guitar mangle. Vocals are heavily-processed and possibly without lyrics: they’re mostly Tom G Warrior “ugh”s with tons of delay and have the same prominence as the sci-fi bo-iiing effects that prevail through most songs.

This is very much a record to be experienced in full, the effect of which is exhausting but exhilarating. Brutal Blues take the ultra-bonkers frenzy of Naked City, the jazz-ish, turn-on-a-dime inflections of Discordance Axis and the “two guys battering the absolute shit out of each other” philosophy of he great East-West Blast Test record. In the time it’s taken me to write this I’ve listened to the record through in full and I need a lie down. Brilliant!

Five tracks of foul-smelling grindcore from Insomnia Isterica, whose 7″s in the past couple of years have always been of a really high quality. Maybe a bit of a troglodyte PV element going on here with some cool slow parts and total drooling vocals, remind me a wee bit of SPAZZ in between all the Agathocles worship!
Grossel up the Agathocles ante here with four songs of total mince worship. Proper basic, knuckle-dragging stuff here: that’s not a criticism, it’s exactly what I want in my grind! Really messy, horrid blasting tunes. Great.
The artwork on this is noteable too, absolutely stunning stuff! The same guy does all Insomnia Isterica’s artwork and I really love that cohesion of aesthetic. Really nice in an environment where that aspect is often treated in quite a lazy, throwaway manner.

It’s been a while, but absolutely chuffed to release the long-awaited return of VOM.

It’s been four years since Altered States, and three years since they last played live due to some shit circumstances, but these bad vibes have been funnelled into this piece of absolutely untouchable dark art; a dense and often difficult-to-penetrate album that takes patience but reaps great rewards.

Initiation is a further step into the void; there’s only one track with vocals (and they’re buried deep in the mix, somewhere between Birthdeath-Skullflower and Total Sex-era Whitehouse). The guitar playing is almost entirely formless, long notes of wailing electric scree piercing the pounding martial drums and voodoo bass tones. They’ve been called “goth” before, but this is less Siousxie And The Banshees and more Cindytalk…beyond the confines of narrow genre description.

This is much more of a jam record than Vom have ever done; the rhythm section holding it together whilst the guitar wildly calls the shots above it all. It’s absolutely fucking brilliant.

ATWAR166REGLER – Regel #4 (HNW) CD

Regler is a project from Mattin (known mostly for collaborations with Junko, Phillip Best, Tony Conrad and others) and Anders Bryngelsson of Brainbombs.

This project aims to re-create musical sub-genres using only traditional “rock” instruments; in this case, harsh noise wall. I guess my feelings on HNW are mixed; by putting out what I’d argue is the “gateway” release on the genre (Proanomie by Vomir) I have to take some responsibility for what is maybe the most redundant sub-sub genre of them all, one which in my opinion often uses ridiculous over-conceptualisation to mask an entire lack of originality. Which is kind of entirely the opposite to what Vomir was all about when he came up with the term! Anyway, how best to combat this: take it from an entirely new angle! Good! Regler on this album most definitely play ROCK music, but it’s half an hour of absolutely blistering, all-out, in-the-red heavy metal. It’s exhausting and invigorating and totally unlike anything else, and is the closest thing I’ve heard in years to the spirit of the genius avant-rock of Les Rallizes Denudes without actually sounding anything like them. Most certainly one for those interested in hearing the limits of rock music and where it can go. Recommended!

I know I say a lot in these wee write-ups, “I’m so glad to finally get this out”….but this one really has been in the works for YEARS. Look at the catalogue number! Actually I think that was changed, sure it was originally ATWAR032.

I parked the idea of doing a Culver LP some time ago cos quite frankly, not enough people buy this kinda stuff. It’s a shame, but it’s true. Lots of people say they love the music, but comparatively few actually put their hand in their pocket. Anyway, having a “real” job now encouraged me to go for it, get essentially a large number of tes presses done, and got the smallest run of LPs I have ever pressed out there! Pressing costs are ridiculous for such a low run, so these are actually being sold BELOW cost price!

The opening track is a guitar drone which is total Thrones And Dominions, melodic and heavy, driving and powerful. Second track is gentle acoustic picking which gives way to an avalanche of layers of harsh, cold static with an overlaid electric guitar line coming through and synth chord coming through the gloom like a ray of light parting the storm, then in comes the acoustic guitar again. Brilliant. Side two is one long track, an industrial churning machine built through complex layers of christ-knows-what. Not a million miles away from recent Skullflower. Total death factory. Twelve minutes and…..finished.

Needless to say, this is as chuffed as I have ever been with a release and one that will be coming to the grave with me. Literally!

A year or so back my old pal Mories decided to start up Gnaw Their Tongues again as a recording unit, after spending some time doing other stuff and playing live. As a big part of the early days of the label, and because I think Mories is one of the coolest guys I’ve ever met through doing music, I got in touch to see if he’d be up for doing a new record for AWWFN. So anyway, he said yeah and actually had a split in mind with this band called Dead In The Manger. It never happened unfortunately because Dead In The Manger wanted it released on a “bigger label”. Well done fellas, you’re the biggest wankers I’ve come across in quite some time, thumbs up to you. Now fuck off you wet wee hipsters.

So anyway, after regaining my composure and drying my eyes after being so horribly jilted by a bunch of short-hair cardigan-wearers, Mories kindly suggested an even better idea: he’d recently got a fuck-off analogue synth and was translating the signature creeping doorway-to-hell soundtrack that characterised Gnaw Their Tongues into an even more obtuse manifestation: OFFERBEEST.

Black Teeth has everything that is brilliant about Gnaw Their Tongues (the suffocating sense of dread, dramatic whirring sounds of evil, death tolls across desolate landscapes) but takes it entirely out of the “metal” context. I’m sure there’ll be GTT fans who won’t dig it and were just in it for the black metal kult points, but this for me is the most obvious next step on from GTT. Brilliant! The story of this record is a long one, and this was actually originally conceived of as an LP to be released some 7 years ago! Due to well….never having enough money to splurge on pressing a Culver LP I kept putting it off and putting it off until I finally got enough dosh together, only to decide that an LP should be more representative of where Culver is at now…and so this recording finally sees the light of day as a tape, with a new LP at press now!

So what’s the deal with this one, then? Three tracks, opening with 5 minutes of industrial damage; a cold metal static shock before the long, shimmering synth tones of Levitational Pull. This sounds like what Coil were coming up with in their late drone period and is absolute minimal magnificence: 12 minutes of sheer melodious bliss.

Side 2 is a completely different colour altogether: the dread horror synth that Culver executes so well re-appearing along with a towering wall of static oppression building throughout. Heavy.

ATWAR178DAKIS & MILLE KARALI – Island Of Death OST 7″

So, the story behind this one is a long one, and probably a boring one. Read the News section for the full tale!

This soundtrack has been unearthed from the vaults for the first time since the film was released in 1976. For those not in the know, Island Of Death is a cult classic which was banned in the UK along with many other “Video Nasties” for its scenes of gratuitous violence, sex and nudity.

Even now, this is one of the most ridiculously over-the-top and downright WEIRD of the nasties, and as such is one of my favourites. This is typified really by the infamous theme song, “Destination: Understanding”, which first and foremost is an absolutely brilliant tune, but set against a backdrop of incest, insane violence, rape and bestiality, sets a juddering tone of unease with its gentle swaying rhythm and calipso melody. Only the magnificently sweeping theme to Cannibal Holocaust can match it in my opinion. Where’s the weirdness? Well, check out the lyrics. The singer tells us of the wonders of the day, the people “left like clay”. He tells us he’s dying. What are the killers made of concrete? The chorus is urging us to “GET THE SWORD” while some maniac shrieks that we must KILL THEM ALL. Jesus is referenced, flying. Absolutely everything I hold dear about music is encapsulated in this absolute fucking masterful wee beauty of a tune, and I cannot express how utterly CHUFFED I am to be the guy finally unleashing it!

So round about Christmas this year I was sat in the house feeling sorry for myself and I did what I usually do in such situations: go to my record collection. I was digging through a shoebox of 7″s and came across Confuse – “Nuclear Addicts”: a more raging, raw, PUNK record you will not find! Anyway, it set me on a path of spending about a week listening to nothing but Japanese punk and hardcore, and the result was I had a fucking great Christmas holiday, spending many a loud night with damaged lugholes. So, it got me thinking how cool these records were….I don’t know what the reason for it was, but many of them came as flexi discs rather than hard vinyl records; as a format it’s totally bizarre but also kinda cool. I’d seen a few people put out flexis recently and thought “fuck it, I’m gonna do a series of one-offs, make them live recordings so that bands might be up for trading off against the potential pitfalls of the format, maybe get some bigger bands who otherwise wouldn’t do a record on a shit wee label like mine”. So, anyway, here’s the result!

Paranoid are the current best hardcore band around. They’ve released a bunch of records, attracted attention and got an LP out on hip barometer Southern Lord, and gained huge plaudits from all corners for their ace sound which takes in raw scandi-punk, early 80s-Japanese hardcore, UK82 and d-beat, whilst never sounding like a rip-off of any of the above.

This 7″ sees them firing through three tracks rapid, and it is RAW. If you want a well-recorded hifi experience, go to another label pal, that’s not what I’m all about! The sound of this record perfectly captures the absolute untethered violence and caustic rage of a Paranoid gig: feedback, spit, ripping vocals, savage riffs rising from the cacophony. Fucking brilliant punk rock, nuff said.

Here we go, the heaviest band in the world! A bit too weird and experimental for the regular doom crowd, too bludgeoningly heavy for the avante-garde folk, NIGHTSTICK were always a bit of a red-headed stepchild at the party. Albeit a red-headed stepchild smoking crack and punching the kid who’s party it was in the face. Having recorded this record over twelve years ago and facing the apathy of safe world of big metal labels, finally Rock And Roll Weymouth finds a home at At War With False Noise!

As a teenager in the mid-to-late 90s, the metal mainstream was clogged up almost entirely with trendy boring shit and hearing Nightstick for the first time was an absolute revelation for me. I loved how their songs would often just completely fall apart under their own sheer weight and power, meandering under a brutal bass tone of psychedelic guitar freakout for a while before coming back for another assault. Rob Williams was the drummer in the great SIEGE and it seems that being in the band who invented grindcore wasn’t enough and slowing it down and turning it up were the only things left to do.

Anyway…to the album! This record kinda loosely follows Floyd’s Ummagumma with each member of the band contributing a solo piece, along with three long album tracks. The album kicks off at breakneck pace with the band’s title song – quite possibly their best tune ever and bests even Pig In Shit for sheer catchy destruction – which halfway through blows itself out in a cloud of psychedelic haze. Emerging from this is the banjo-infused “Let Your Freak Flag Fly”, which ends with a hilarious message from the lamest promoter of all time trying to explain why he shat it from putting them on live. “The Boot Of Discipline” is total heavy-duty mantra time and everything is rounded off with a caveman doom version of Also Sprach Zarathustra.

Needless to say, to put out a lost album from one of my favourite bands is a mighty honour for myself and for me this is their best record ever (yet?!). ENJOY!

Creepy, deathly horror electronics from Mexico. The more discerning black metal fans amongst you will be aware of Funereal Moon, an early black metal band who in the early 90s eschewed the “Fago” sound of all those around them and delivered a more avante, strange version of black metal, influenced more by the then-nascent European scene. Leteo was their original name and in fact the monicker under which their first demo was released.
So, over 20 years later and Leteo has been resurrected as a duo with the inimitable Miguel Perez (of Le Mancha Del Pecado, Skull Mask and also now a member of Funereal Moon). “Nothing But The Night” is hard to pin down to a genre, informed as it is by dark ambient, the atmosphere of black metal, and even Ennio Morriconne (maybe it’s just me hearing that!).
It’s one of the most unique, haunting and suffocatingly dark recordings I’ve heard in a long time, and I absolutely love it. Hope there guys do more and hope to work with them again.

Vuil’s 7″ from last year was one of my favourite records and this is sure to be one of my favourites from this year. Going even further from the more necrotic first wave-black metal sound of their early material, they’re in 100% heavy metal territory here: the spirit of Exciter, Agent Steel and Razor weighs heavy. Nice to see a band not take themselves entirely seriously; having a tune called “Heavy Boozer” is brilliant.

Cult Brazilian brutality here from 1994. I’ve heard this described as “noisecore” – and these guys came from the same starting point as the seminal Brazil noisecore bands – but even by the pretty rough standards of those bands, this is out there.
No noticeable differentiation between “songs”, no drums audible, just an absolute barrage of high-end screeching guitar feedback, unrelentingly savage noise.
First time on vinyl (great format for this gear!) after only being available as a demo tape in the 90s. Get it!

So, after the shop failed and the debacle with the Bong record I’ve become pretty much really scunnered with releasing music and trying to keep going with this. I found the whole thing was getting more soulless and a total bummer all round, so decided to get back to what the label was all about in the first place: putting out records by bands I really like who otherwise wouldn’t get the time of day, and hopefully turn people on to cool stuff, with less regard on turning a profit than just putting my favourite music out there. So, this five year old SLOTH album is now coming out, because I love Sloth and I hope you do too!
If you’ve ever heard Sloth before then you’ll probably know that they rarely come out with what you’d expect. This LP is weird, fractured, poorly recorded and with little or no heed paid to traditional song structure or listenability, and for maybe all those reasons I love it. It’s heavy and beyond distorted; going between tar-pit sludge to stupid childish messing around at the drop of a hat. It’s so blown out the record sounds like its about to skip, there’s a scuzzy layer of tape hiss over everything and frequently parts are inaudible under whatever happens to be nearest the speaker at that moment in time.
I don’t expect many people really GET Sloth, but if you do, you’ll love this album. I’ve said it before: Sloth are my favourite band who aren’t The Fall, and I think both bands share many parrallels. “This song is called Baby Goat Is With His New Friends, sing along if you know the words”. Right on!

This one had been in the planning for a while and was scheduled to be a 7″. As Wadge’s last release it would’ve been cool for it to be on vinyl along with C3L, but we talked about it and you know what? I couldn’t give a shit about vinyl any more. For much less money you can produce the same music on a format with better sound quality and charge less money for it. It’s really as simple as that. I’ve been into vinyl since I was a wee guy, since as long as I’v ebeen buying music, and I’m sick to the back teeth of these “nu collector” types coveting shit-sounding bits of plastic that cost a fortune. This one will seperate the real deals from the posers: here’s the tunes, music over format.
So, the tunes: neither band should really need much of an introduction. WADGE make the best grind around in my opinion, it’s got a sense of humour without being lame, the riffs are top-notch and not the general cliched blurr/Scum rip-off and it’s all endowed with a hefty dose of hardcore punk influence. I fuckin love Wadge.
Captain Three Leg are another absollutely under-appreciated band. They’ve ben going forever and Andy has been heroically running the Mortville label for absolutely fuck all for years now, all whilst several jokers have started and ended bands, scenes and run labels all around him. This C3L recording sounds great, punchy grind with multiple vocals which make it sound proper frantic. As with Wadge, there’s a definite punk (or perhaps more crossover – I can head a bit of SOD in here) influence going on and the tunes are catchy as fook. I don’t know if it’s a cover of a theme tune I’m not aware of, but it ends with a cracking wee cheesy 80s sci-fi-sounding instrumental. 100% top marks.

Absolutely astonishing debut from one of the best bands I’ve heard since starting this label. Legion Of Andromeda don’t reinvent the wheel…they more kinda take the wheel and use it as a primitive weapon to smash it into yer face repeatedly until it’s a bloody pulp.
This is stripped-back music as its most primordial. Each song is just one of two basic riffs, repeated over and over again; a simple pounding bass drum beat and inhuman animal growled vocals. It’s properly fucking HEAVY. You hear people calling music “brutal” and it almost never applies but this truly is savage, brutal, corrossive music.
The monotony renders it almost ridiculous, but the SOUND – thanks to a Steve Albini production – is utterly compelling and has to be heard to be believed. Truly believe this record is gonna be considered a true monolith in heavy music for years to come. GET IT HERE FIRST.

FINALLY, it’s here! This release has been in gestation for about four years now I think, delayed initially by wondering what format to do it on, then most significantly by me not being able to ever get the funds together to do it justice, then by various sound problems. But….now it’s finished!
This album was conceived as a soundtrack to an imaginary film by an imaginary director, and the resulting music is a score which is at turns pulsating, rollicking, and atmospheric. It’s got a totally late 70s/early 80s straight-to-video sound to it, with a slightly murky sludgey tone cut through by catchy synth lines and even the odd cheeseball total butt-rock guitar riff.
This is a really special release for me as Alan Sinclair (the man behind the black gloves of RV) has been a good pal for many years and we came up with much of the aesthetic of this record together; and after being a bit gutted not to be able to do the vinyl release of this I’ve really put a lot of effort into making this release as cool and authentic as it possibly can be! Hope you guys dig it as much as we do.

After releasing one of the finest debuts to come out of Glasgow in years, Vom have had this one gestating for quite long enough! This follow-up to 2009’s “Primitive Arts” continues with their signature shamanistic-cult goth sound and ups the ante considerably in density and foreboding atmosphere, whilst also exploring more of a “pop” sensibility on a couple of tracks, and even ends with a quasi-martial industrial track which sounds to these ears bang-on early Mortiis!

Vocals are still pushed quite far back in the mix and are much more overtly early Sisters Of Mercy here, with drummer Matt only contributing his heavily-reverbed power electronic-esque moans to a couple of songs. Drumming is very minimal (recently they moved to a drum machine for a while) but lethally effective, and the whole thing is driven along by pounding, simple bass lines, cut through by wailing guitar lines.

Vom aren’t a band to pander to the crowd and after four years since the last album this is a more than worthy follow-up which still maintains the drive and intensity of the debut without re-hashing. Best band in Scotland hands down!

FINALLY! After several production problems this is finally ready to go, and it’s worth the wait!
Kilslug are one of my favourite bands, and it’s an absolute major honour to release their music on my wee label. This track has the characteristics of their sound – brilliant, twisted dirge punk with the best vocal delivery ever – but has a really punchy production and driving, meaty sound. It’s a perfect follow-up to their long-awaited second album and not just an aimless re-hash of their 80s sound, but retains exactly that which was ace about them in the first place – ie EXACTLY what you want from a band coming back after years out of the game!
Drunk In Hell have been going for ages now but this is their first proper release….and what a side it is! I won’t go through the list of previous bands (they are many and they’re mostly fuckin ace!) cos DiH stand alone as a powerful force to be reckoned with. This is some of the most savage, heavy, grotty dirge-sludge-punk ever put to tape. It’s an absolute war of feedback and does not relent in its 6 minute run-time. Once the needle drops there is nowhere to hide. Perfect brutality.

Anyway, that aside, this Belgian three-piece are great. Top class driving noise rock with a big punk influence, very heavily influenced by the great 16 in their ability to make crunching Am-Rep style noise rock but with a very listenable punk backbone. Not quite the feedback-laden dirge of say, Throat, but more of an emphasis on driving, stripped-back ferocity. Top stuff!

Communion Of Thieves have been turning heads this past year or so with their brand of devestating d-beat blast, black metal intensity and punk ethic, and these two tracks showcase their style perfectly. It sounds a bit like “Under A Funeral Moon” era Darkthrone giving hardcore a go (ie better than Darkthrone giving hardcore a go now). Top marks!
Dendritic Arbor are less of a straightforward proposition, combining elements of grind, hardcore and noise to a complex, near-avant whole. Everything comes together to a satisfying whole though with some nice riffs and grooves going on.

CD issue of this instant classic of avant-sludge. This is the only recording Gruel made, or will ever make since they announced their recent split, and what a testament it is! Like The Melvins playing King Crimson’s “Red” album, this is at both theatrical, beautifully composed, and troglodyte-ianly heavy. Utterly immersive, each passage of quiet atmospherics is shattered by a barrage of brilliant repetitious riffing. Four 15 minute-long songs and it’s totally captivating from start to finish. Will definitely be right up the alleys of those into Melvins, Swans, Grief, Throbbing Gristle, Goblin, Harvey Milk etc etc etc.

Les Hommes Chiens from Canada came to my attention over a year ago when I got in a copy of their debut tape (still available in distro by the way!) and was blown away by the rough and ready sci-fi space noise within. This one is much more focussed, minimal and esoteric. One long piece built around a simple, throbbing bass line, with a slow build of analogue electronics coming through. There’s a feeling of space here, not only in the allusions to 2001: A Space Odyssey, but the actual sparseness of the sound. Another absolute topper of a tape from these guys.
Spermicidal is a new project by Cathal Rodgers of Wreck Of The Hesperus and Wereju. This is SERIOUSLY heavy stuff, sluggish, monolithic industrial metal in the vein of the first Godflesh LP. I’m reminded most of all by the Tom Choi sound, most particularly the genius IT IS I album; this has the same uber-low tone, relentlessly thumping bass drum and nasty, almost computerized vocals. It’s fuckin great quite frankly!

These guys should need little introduction: always a formidable live force, they do a good job of translating their fierce, intense and energetic grinding rabble to tape, and the 20 tracks here are testament to that. Staunch supporters of the DIY punk ethic, to Filthpact the music is a vehicle for more than just making some tunes and that’s why I love them! Grind punk that gets to the heart of what the genre is all about.

I still firmly believe the CD has a valid place, particularly when vinyl is getting more expensive and ridiculous all the time!

    New (and final) reissue of the long-sold out demo tape that Funeral Folk put out in an edition of 66 copies and I released in an edition of 500 a couple of years ago. People keep asking if this will be available again and since the new Alkerdeel album is imminent (next month!!!) we figured we may as well do another run at a low price to let those who missed out first time hear what all the hassle is about. This is some of the most filthy, disgusting stuff I’ve ever heard; one long track that goes from all-out black metal fuzz to passages of total low-end DOOM to seriously disturbed ambient passages, all sounding like it was recorded on somebody’s walkman in a dungeon somewhere. 20-odd minutes of totally harrowing bleakness. True Belgian nihilism!!

I’ve loved everything Cheer has touched since I first heard him a few years ago and to be honest it’s pretty criminal that in three years of doing At War this is the first time we’ve ever done anything together.
The cassette format really works well for the uniquely warm, organic sound Cheer manages to so effotlessly make. Some beautiful acoustic guitar strums here, field recordings and tonal experiments. Brings to mind Eno in his early ambient days; there’s definitely a Terr Riley/Steve Reich influence going on there, albeit via the melodic sensibilities of Smog/Arvo Part. This is probably the least “noise” of anything I’ve ever done, but I think that works in its favour and I’m chuffed to release such a great record by such a great guy! Support!

With a tin-can sound that reminds me loads of SLOTH (which is maybe why I think these guys are so great), as well as the prevelance of Nazi-style symbolism throughout their artwork, these guys are never going to be supporting Ghost or Uncle Acid on their next world stadium tour. And thank fuck for that!
Three tracks here of insanely catchy memorable music with the grim basement black metal recording sound there is. Why on earth would anyone listen to another bunch of beardy, made-up 70s, toothless “occult rock” gimps like Kadaver when stuff like this exists? Beats me.

I absolutely love everything about these guys, from the driving, pulverising ultra-repetitive riffing, really caustic, in-your-face production job to the bizarre, bold, grotedque artwork they use. There’s something really GRIMY to everything about these Finns, from the really rusty guitar sound to the fact that this LP comes with a 12×12″ insert of personal ads for men who like to be peed on and stuff.

If your boat has ever been floated by AmRep, can’t be arsed with Unsane any more, and thought Helmet went crap after their first record then do yourself a favour and check these guys out!

Very proud to get this one out! First time on CD for both these bands: Culver, possibly the most under-appreciated “experimental” musician in the UK who’s been making some of the most awe-inspiring drone/noise for years. For those of you who don’t know, Lee Stokoe plays bass in Geordie post-whatever geniuses Marzuraan as well as being the current foil to Matthew Bower’s walls of scraping guitar noise in Skullflower, but Culver is his “main” project. On this CD he gives us a 30 min+ deluge of harrowing.bassy drone. It starts off like the sound of the generator from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and similarly purveys a sense of crawling dread at what is to come. Soon things get more desperate before being crushed into oblivion by a wall of crushing amplifier noise, which slowly develops into a more sedative shifting tone that wouldn’t have been out of place on a Conrad Schnitzler record in the 70s. Perfect!

Seppuku give us two tracks in very different styles….first track “Inga” sees a full band play some unbearably heavy doom. Ushered in by what sounds like a tolling bell, this gives way to some Throbbing Gristle-esque hydraulic pumping before the guitars kick in and everything is laid to waste. Brutal low frequencies and inhuman low/screaming vokilllllls….heavy duty! Second track Emanuelle is enhanced by the appearance of Deek and Stevie from Messiah Complex; sounds very post-industrial power electronics, with walls of bleak static forming the backbone of the track, interspersed with what sounds like post-apocalyptic winds of death, and some distorted lines of screeched vocal. Unpleasant.

Comes in a jewel case with a 12-page glossy booklet featuring pics of my favourite euro-babes. Released in tribute to the most beautiful woman to have ever graced the world with her presence, Soledad! 500 copies.

NOISECORE here we go!
Pissdeads is a one-man band from Russia who’s been grinding out his own brand of sloppy noisecore/grind for a good few years now. This side is sloppy blurr/grind with ultra-harsh distorted vocals and viscious high-end from the drums.
Deathwank are a side-project of superb grinders Sufferinfuck and this is their first appearance on vinyl after a raft of tapes on various labels. Very, very harsh sound going on here: the recording is pushed so far into the red instruments are barely discernable and the screaming vocals cut right through everything. There are some fucki great riffs going on here though, and this defiitely skirts with a more traditional grind sound more often than the ultra-short blasts of many other bands of the genre. Brilliant stuff! My only complaint is there’s no songs titles, cos they’re usually class!

Here we have a split from two of the UK’s best new wave of heavy doom!

Bismuth are a two-piece from Nottingham and make one of the most unholy rackets on just a bass and drums I’ve ever heard put to tape! Their side of this split is a 17 minute slow-motion low-end rumble, with shudderingly low bass frequencies cut through by high-picthed wailing screams. It all comes to a creeping lull of feedback and dense tone toward the end.

Undersmile’s track is a droning funeral mantra of epic proportions. Taking the sombre majesty of the classic funeral doom sound and introducing a more sludge mentality, this is a plodding, enthralling side of wax, and the twin non-screamy female vocals really set it apart. Excellent!

Stunning Tony Roberts artwork which suits the mood of these bands perfectly and remids me of the grandiose illustrations from the original publication of The Hobbit!

ATWAR146HAIKAI NO KU – Octopoidal Monolith cassette

Second tape on At War from this great Newcastle trio. Since the first demo I put out over a year ago, HNK have released a full-length CD and an LP on Burning World, and have played at the Roadburn Festival!

This tape sees HNK away from “album” mode, being a totally free-form 30 minute plus death dirge jam. It builds up to an intense high (pun intended) at the 16 minute mark, floating in clouds of Hashishian vapour before plummeting toward the riff-filled land prophesied in “Jerusalem” years before.

While the heady influence of Fushitsusha is most certainly at the forefront, Mike Vest is still calling the shots here and there’s more in common on this record with his day job with cosmic stoner warlords BONG that on any Haikai record before. One of my favourite bands going around right now, hopefully we’ll be having more to come from these guys soon!

It’s been a couple of years now since I last released a Culver record, so thank feck he sent me this one! There have been a few collaborations between Lee and new Mexican noiser La Mancha so far, this being the third (though I think the fourth released).

Even for Culver, this is very minimal stuff. It starts off at its harshest point, sounding like a raging stormfront, lulling to a barely-heard block fuzz. As ever with anything Culver related, it’s all about TONE. There’s not an awful lot going on here but these guys give everything plenty of space to breathe, giving a real feeling of dimension. As ever, top stuff.

Nut Screamer is Steveggs of legendary noisecore band PILE OF EGGS pretty much just farting about. Ultra-phased vocals and weird noise zaps in the background, it sounds pretty much like he’s being zapped with a cattle prod. “HOW IS THIS EVEN MUSIC?!” Ha! Who gives a fuck. Class 7″.

One long track from two new ultra heavy bruisers, Amarok from the US and Poland’s Enth.
Enth play funeral doom with a real old school death metal feel to it. There’s a real gloomy, cloying atmosphere to it that very much brings to mind early 90s European doom bands – remember Sempiternal Deathreign? Bang on! There’s a lot going on here; there’s a melancholic piano line and what sounds like violin near the end. Fantastic stuff, and seriously some of the best music of this style I have heard in ages.
Amarok are more straightforward and play a style more similar to the new american sludge/doom wave of the past few years. Dual screaming/growling vocals (VERY Alan Dubin!), repetitive and slow, ultra low-end riffing and sparse but solid, driving percussion, this will definitely appeal to those into Thou, Salome, Cough and all that.
Solid release, this was a collaboration between myself and Boue and Vendetta in Europe. USA copies should be obtained from Halo Of Flies and Orca Wolf. We’ve had a bunch of backpatches for each band screenprinted up too; if you want the pair just add an extra pound!

Absolutely storming death metal from the UK, this is a real lost gem and I am absolutely chuffed to be reissuing it after all these years!!

This record originally came out in 1990, at the height of the death/thrash boom and I guess it may have been lost a little bit in the crowd. This is a shame because this album is a good as any of the UK death metal scene at the time, and has a real crawling, incredily heavy sound.

The production is raw but heavy, the guitars a real wall of grinding churn. There are some fantastic riffs going on here that have a real gloomy edge to them and the sheer weight carried by the songs is suffocating and dense.

Desecrator only ever released this one album (and an even more obscure demo) and original copies go for silly money on eBay so grab your chance to get this now!

I’ve been wanting to do a release with The Rita for absolutely ages, but I’m honest, I’d always avoided it because I was scared I’d get a “no”. The Rita AKA Sam McKinlay is probably my favourite proponent of harsh noise going right now and has been for some years, and this could be considered in many ways his ultimate work.

A sprawling triple LP set dedicated to the seedy underbelly of the sex trade, here The Rita works in collaboration with (or uses their source material as a basis of his noise) three of the most interesting noise units going right now: CONCERN, CALIGULA031 and MANIA.

The Rita’s all-out assault on the senses possibly isn’t often known for its subtlety but throughout this epic set there are so many layers, sounds, textures that there is something new and exciting to be found on each listen. An absolute masterwork of harsh noise and an instant classic of the genre!

At long last: the Grey Emperor has arrived! This material was finished some time ago but the packaging has been so expensive and taken so long that it’s been delayed massively.
Wraiths have been one of my favourite bands in the UK for a long time now and were one of my highlights of Glasgow Implodes last year, and it’s been a pleasure to share a stage with them on several occasions now. The Grey Emperor is a real statement of intent, and shows that Wraiths are miles ahead of the rest of the drone pack with an album that is utterly drenched in dark, oppresive atmosphere and gives a genuinely creepy experience to the listener. So often Wraiths’ drone kin come out with a “volume over everything else” mantra and what they do so effectively on this release is to build up tension, atmosphere, sheer black MALICE throughout the (one track’s!) 60 minute running time. Less is more, and from the repetitive drum beats at the start to the howling crescendo, the constrictive anxiety of the music is never comprimised. You won’t find a horn section or guest vocalists here, just total ritualistic drone evil. HAIL!

I always thought you weren’t a proper band or label until you’d done a split 7″ with Agathocles, so here we go: after 135 releases I can finally consider myself a proper label!

Agathocles give us two tracks that sound pretty much the same and are most definitely NOT in their usual style! Thos elooking for mincecore, wait for the 7″ I’m doing with Archagathus! This was recorded during the “From Grey…” LP sessions (indeed one of the songs is “From Grey…To Black” and as such is in the bizarre synth-pop-grind style, with weird high-pitched vocals, drum machine and simplistic synthesiser throughout. I guess doing a split with a noise band like Hogra meant AxGx felt they had to bring out some bizarre material from the bag!

Hogra has two tracks here, the first starts with a loop that sounds a bit like the “explosion” sounds on Sutcliffe Jugend’s “When Pornography Is No Longer Enough” before more grinding loops continue, overlaid with ominous heavilly-processed vocals. Sinister stuff indeed. The second track is a cacophany of high-pitched noise which ver much brings to mind the early power eletronics sound. Excellent material as ever.

I should mention that Hogra’s side plays at 45 and Agathocles’ at 33. I’m sure Marty Jerkoff didn’t notice this when he got them in, such was his desire to get them up for sale and making cash before anyone else, or perhaps because he’s a complete mongo.

ATWAR129RESONAUT – Sky Burial 12″

Resonaut are from Norway and play some of the best heavy doom metal I’ve heard in ages. In the late 90s this kinda music was really unfashionable but a few bands were still grinding away at it and a very distinct sound developed. Band like Church Of Misery, Blood Farmers and Pale Divine used the Sabbath blueprint but also took note from stuff like Sleep’s seminal “Jerusalem” record with its shamanistic overtones and dope-smoke haze feedback throughout and Electric Wizard’s mind-bendingly heavy tones. Anyway, since then there’s been a massive up-surge in interest in doom metal (a good thing!) but very few bands seem to play this style any more, with the kinda boring sludge scene taking over for a while and now the “sound EXACTLY like Sabbath/Blue Cheer” thing going on, it’s really nice to see a band who just play solid doom metal without any agenda.

The two numbers on here both feel quite “epic” in scope, lots of long sustained riffs and brilliant bellowing vocals (which again remind me a lot of Blood Farmers!). The production job is top-notch, and two songs cut at 45 on a 12″ is the maximal way to listen to this kinda stuff.

A cracking new Sabbath album out this very same week proves that doom metal will never die, and bands like Resonaut continue to live their legacy. Doom on!

Quite possibly the longest-delayed of all At War releases, this one was recorded about four years ago I think and both bands split up long ago. I’ve never been one to let commercial viability get in the way of a release though and this one had to happen eventually!
Seppuku do 57 tracks of raging and weird noisecore that was much more similar to what the band attempted to play live. Heavy and off-kilter spastic stuff; each track is dedicated to a method of murder from a giallo!
Necrocum were from Germany and featured members of Taunt. Their side is more conventional grind – very lofi and with a real groove going through it – not a million miles away from the great Necrocannibalistic Vomitorium.

One of the weirdest of At War releases, this one went to the plant in April and well, it kind of came back eventually!

We sent this one off ages ago, intending it to be 150 copies, so that two ultra-limited lathes would be available to more people! Well, as it turned out the pressing plant we used (OFM Vinyl now you ask, they’ve gone now anyway, but the guy who’s been avoiding me like a snake is LOIC REMY who now appears to be working at official.fm) just stopped responding to me after a few months of “where are my bloody records?”.
Anyway, luckily one really nice guy worked for them and helped me out by at least getting something back – he went into the plant and pressed off as many as he could and mailed them out! So there we go, a release intended to be available for longer turns out to be probably the lowest run proper vinyl you’ll ever come across!

Anyway, this is a comp of two incredibly limited lathes that came out in 2008, splits with Deche Charge and Intumbesence respectively. Musically this is ultra lo-fi grinding noisecore with a mad spacey sci-fi twist from one of my favourite bands currently going. Grindcore is mainly pretty bland these days and guys like CSMD totally stand out from the pack as a band doing something REALLY original. 100% top notch!

Combining the super-fuzz garage sensibilities of Davie Allen And The Arrows and the catchy riffing and keen sense of songwriting of the “new” Electric Wizard, Satan’s Satyrs have injected a youth breath of fresh air into the oft staid confines of the crypt of underground metal this past year or so through a series of ultra-limited singles and EPs. Wild Beyond Belief! is the first full-length and delivers on the promise of those early demos and then some.
I got chatting with Clay of SS a wee while back over a mutual love of late 60s biker movies, and they really form the basis of this record; from the artwork and the lyrics (“Ride Devils, ride, ride Sadist 69!”) to the lo-fi recording sounding like it could’ve come straight from a greasy backstreet Grindhouse showing Hell’s Angels On Wheels. There are no boring “drone” elements here, there’s no chin-stroking/beards anywhere in sight, and the exploitation schlock element has a firm basis rather than some clown who watched Susperia cos Electric Wizard said they liked it and Googled “occult flares lol” in search of an album cover. It’s just TUNES and ATTITUDE. Right on!

SS hit us with a raw, heavy doom punk version of Flag’s most Sabbath moment ever – Modern Man from the criminally under-rated Loose Nut LP – and a stunning slice of 60s-style instrumental desert rock. Cracking stuff from a band really going places!

Ohmwar give us “Snake”, the opening number from the recently-released Live tape (still available!) and it’s a raging slice of almost noise-rock infused garage punk, following up with just about my favourite song of all time, NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. Perfection!

In 1988 – around the time that Saint Vitus were dropped from SST and in a state of flux – legendary frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich joined the LA metal band Lost Breed as their singer for around nine months. During that time they played a bunch of gigs and recorded a demo. Wino then hooked up again with Vitus for the next couple of years and Lost Breed went on to do two albums thanks to Wino’s connection with Hellhound Records of Germany, Save Yourself and The Evil In You And Me.
Anyway, enough of the history lesson. This recording was bootlegged by Marshall Levy/Mars Hall of Doom/Peace Records of Maryland and has never been widely available until now.
Musically Lost Breed are less all-out “doom” than a lot of the Hellhound bands, though they definitely have thier nods to the masters of all, Black Sabbath. Listening to the driving riffing of “Coffin Cheater” and “Soul Chariot” there’s most certainly a heavy Randy Rhoades-era Ozzy/early Quiet Riot influence going on, and Wino’s soulful vocals and lyrics totally set the band apart. These guys have a craft to writing a song that very few bands possess and I’m amazed that they never became huge. The song “Lost Breed” has to be amongst my favourite pieces of music ever recorded, the lyrics and delivery are absolutely 100% what it’s all about for me. “Chosen few, for life we bleed, forever true, a lost breed”.

Whilst I’m a huge fan of Wino and own and love everything he’s ever put his name to, Lost Breed are genuinely one of my favourite bands of all time and every song they ever recorded is genuis as far as I’m concerned, so putting out this record really means a lot to me. This has been a bit of a labour of love and it’s taken such a long time because I wanted it to be the best it could be!

Having only just recently done an (albeit great) LP with Amarok I was a little bit reticent to do another so quickly, but when I heard this track I was pretty blown away and knew I had to go for it! On this side Amarok have a total Saint Vitus “Walking Dead” guitar sound – ultra thick and dirgey – but they combine this with a kinda of hardcore and metal intensity that new wave sludge/HC bands like Cough and Thou eschew so well. Three vocalists give a really extreme multi-layered screaming assault and there’s most definitely a keen ear for a nice metal guitar line in there. Heavy duty stuff and as good as the often dull sludge genre gets.

Swedes Pyramido impressed me loads with their demo and first two albums (both available on Total Rust and I still have copies of “Sand”), their distinctive heavily-distorted, sub-psychedelic sludge doom stood apart from a quite frankly over-crowded marketplace. There’s a definite dry crust/hardcore sound to this that brings to mind Eyehategod or maybe even a less melodious early Crowbar. Top notch!

At long fucking last! Finally glad to release this 12″, which has been happening since over six months ago. Let’s forget about that, though. What we have here are three tracks of old-style power electronics, reminds me particularly of the Sutcliffe Jugend “When Pornography Is No Longer Enough” record. Very minimal in places, with periods of lull interspersed with piercing explosions, static bursts, and constant weird, heavilly processed vocals. Lyrics are very stream-of-consciousness stuff, and the delivery is bang-on, incredibly jarring stuff. Completely at odds with a lot of PE acts around today who tend to go for the muscular beefed-up American-style approach, this is ery much more in the old Come Org vein, aesthetically in in the musical delivery. Good stuff.

Visceral, loud and obnoxious is always the path I’ve personally been most comfortable treading with experimental music over the years and Hal has been an absolute shot in the arm to me recently, having grown rather weary of a lot of treading water and boring “proper” music a lot of contemporary noise artists have been churning out. This is just a document of the supreme worship of SOUND: clanging, scraping, screeching, banging. Heavy fuckin metal!

ATWAR125BONG / PYRAMIDION – Split LP

Here we go, now we mean business! Two of the UK’s finest team up to deliver what is a truly great split release, a record where both sides accompany each other perfectly and there’s little to call between them.
I’ve been on the cusp of doing something with Bong since being in touch with them since before they even recorded anything and absolutely chuffed to finally sort it out! Their side of this LP is one long untitled jam, starting off rather innocuously enough, we’re soon into full-on stoner mode. This has a definite “live in the studio” lofi sound that’s characteristic of most Bong recordings, but is more trippy and less “heavy metal” than much of their output. Particularly there’s a real eastern influence going on here, and Malesch by Agitation Free comes to mind. Everything builds up to a total proper psychedelic blow-out crescendo, and this side is as close to a true representation of Bong’s semi-improvised live sets as any I’ve heard.
Pyramidion are a bit of a Scottish-based international supergroup, featuring several chaps from the fertile Weegie (and Edinburgh) underground scenes. As with Bong, they take up awhole side with their jam, which is less loose and more circular than the Geordie stoners’; it has a very early Krautrock sound with perhaps more than a nod to the legendary live jam sounds of 13th Floor Elevators, Grateful Dead or perhaps Ozric Tentacles (for which they are named by!). Everything builds around a really solid rhythm section with some proper far-out guitaring and spaced vox toward the end. Great these guys are finally out on vinyl, check out the fantastic brain-melting collage artwork whilt listening!

First full album on proper CD from these degenerates. Rape-X play scuzzy, filthy power electronics; all crack dens, backstreet abortions and low-life criminal acts. There’s a lot of ridiculously over-the-top Bloodyminded-esque PE going on here, delivered in a very metal style – but for me they’re at their most effective on long, claustrophic passages such as “Arson” or the harrowing final track, “False”. Dark, sub-industrial clanking in the background, behind walls of air-raid siren drones. Powerful. often brutal stuff, and not for the faint of heart.

One of my favourite discoveries of the past year, Ohmwar from Canada were a revelation to me when I heard their first 7″. Really raw garage-sounding punk rock, on listening I thought “bet these guys are the business live”. Well, being several thousand miles away I’ve not yet had the pleasure, but this blown-out recording captures a short, blistering set perfectly and is the next best thing. Absolutely cracking tunes with minimum of stage banter and the odd sample between tracks, all done and dusted in 17 minutes. No messing.

If you’re after well-recorded, professionally-played rock music this is not for you. If you like raw punk with balls with tons of distortion and plenty of feedback, welcome to your new favourite band!

Doing a new 7″ with these guys along with Satan’s Satyrs very soon so get in on the action before anyone else has heard of em!

I’ve loved everything Cheer has touched since I first heard him a few years ago and to be honest it’s pretty criminal that in three years of doing At War this is the first time we’ve ever done anything together.
The cassette format really works well for the uniquely warm, organic sound Cheer manages to so effotlessly make. Some beautiful acoustic guitar strums here, field recordings and tonal experiments. Brings to mind Eno in his early ambient days; there’s definitely a Terr Riley/Steve Reich influence going on there, albeit via the melodic sensibilities of Smog/Arvo Part. This is probably the least “noise” of anything I’ve ever done, but I think that works in its favour and I’m chuffed to release such a great record by such a great guy! Support!

Deek Crozier and Stevie Innes have been with me since I started At War; as Messiah Complex on the early days of the roster, as bandmates in Seppuku, as customers (!) and most importantly as good pals. When they started up a new band I knew they’d be belting and when I first heard SIF I was blown away. Never ones to just release anything they do though, it’s taken them a couple of years to release their first proper three minutes-worth of music and I’ll say now it’s been worth the wait and then some! This is really intense and focussed stuff; there are definitely some Agathocles/FETO riffs going on there and there’s a definite first-wave power violence sound going on there too. Vocals are bloody amazing, totally blown-out and in-the-red and the lyrics are total Grief/Phobia hatred-of-the-world material. Angry as fuck, uncomprimising music.

To tell the truth there’s hardly anyone in the UK right now who could hold a candle to the SIF side so it’s good that we managed to get one of the few who can! Not too long ago I got the first MANGLE 7″ and I was really impressed, and this recording takes it up a notch again. This is completely about utter, sheer INTENSITY. They go from the boorish Man Is The Bastard stomp to break-neck No Comment grind in an instant, breaking off for a lazy feedback-laden My War-era Ginn solo. Heavy is not the word.

Still as heavy as previous At War LP “Paralyser” but much more in the short, fast and loud vein. This one’s been a set-closer for a while now and is a total rager, will hopefully be a nice surprise to a lot of you! This is the first release by Manchester-based sludgers They Are Cowards and it’s a beast. Totally focussed, grim northern waste-inspired misery, building from a massive Celtic Frost-esque riff. A totally brilliant pairing of northern negativity!

ATWAR103ALKERDEEL – Morinde LP

    Released: Feb ’12

    I guess myself and Alkerdeel have been with each other since the beginning really; since I was just starting the label seriously and when I first heard their debut demo, the masterpiece of lofi filth that is/was “Luizig”. This – their second full-length album proper – is what that first tape hinted at, and follows on from De Speensalvinge as their most fully-formed and best-realised record to date.

    This was recorded entirely live which gives a really raw, urgent and intense feeling to the whole thing that is unique to this record. It kinda sounds like there was some sort of nuclear armageddon and the band found themselves locked in a rehearsal room with no food and thought “fuck it, we may as well just play until the air runs out and we die”. The now-familiar Alkerdeel sound is there: feedback; lurching doom riffs; Panzerfaust played at half-speed; unsettling dark passages of nothing, punctuated with blasts of black metal panic, almost there as if to give you a jolt from the preceding grinding nausea. It’s a tough listen!

    I’m chuffed to finally get Alkerdeel out on vinyl because they belong on an analogue format really. Short sample on Youtube here:

ATWAR097BATTLESTORM – Demonic Incursion LP

    AT LAST this classic of brutal primitive bestial black/death metal is released on vinyl! This has taken an age to get out but after all the problems and delays I couldn’t be happier with how it sounds or looks.
    When Hades first sent me this through over a year ago I was instantly blown away by the combination of blistering, savage riffs, evil underground cave-reverberating vocals and frantic, unrelenting INRI drum sound.
    A lot of bands of this genre are primitive in both production and technical aptitude, and whilst it’s heavy as fuck and never lets up in pace or intensity, the production is clear as a bell and there’s a real feel of classic metal running through the whole album. Check out the wild solo of the intro track before the first riff proper comes in and then chaos ensues.
    Great record and the kind of thing AWWFN will be doing more of in the future. I know price is high but it’s a very limited run and we’ve gone all for it with the packaging here.

Filthpact have been treading the boards of the Scottish punk scene for many years now and came back a couple of years ago after a wee hiatus and I thought they sounded more raging than ever. Starting off here with the classic d-beat instrumental before serving up five tracks of pure raging metallic crust punk that’s got the odd grind flourish and definite nods to metal that go beyond the usual Motorhead influence (check out Roddy’s Halford scream on the last tune!). Excellent!

Sufferinfuck haven’t been going about too long but have already built a solid reputation for themsleves based on their demo tapes, plenty of live gigs across the UK and their excellent 7″ with MANGLE which I put out last year. I think the thing I like best about them is there’s no psuedo-political bent to their music, everything is very simple: short songs, 4-5 words ma per line, everything is fucked. It’s a world view I can get behind to be honest and it allows the power of the music to really come to the fore. Imagine Extreme Noise Terror on anabolic steroids after that Brit Awards gig with The KLF giving No Comment a right shoeing in a broom cupboard. Sounds alright, eh? Get it!

New Newcastle supergroup featuring Mike Vest (Bong, Master Slave, Basillica, Obey, etc), Jerome Smith (Female Borstal) and Sam Booth (Foot Hair, Obey). Phew! Haikai No Ku play some of the most morose, damaged blues psych I’ve heard in beards: death-toll bass and crashing drums lead the way for a solitary guitar line obliterated by total psychedelic guitar scree. Songs start off as loose jams that slowly build up to utter brain-melting acid psychedelia. Early Ramleh gone deathrock?
As ever, it’s got Mike Vest on it, of course it’s good! Favourite new discovery of this year.

ATWAR069VOM – Primitive Arts CD

First full-length album by this Glasgow-based post-goth trio, and one of my absolute favourite At War releases ever! Building on their two-track CDr on Kovorox from a couple of years ago, Vom have come out with a much more attractive proposition than the metal/krautrock hybrid which was going on there; this album is much more focussed, dark and heavy. In fact it’s as brooding and dripping with dark atmosphere as anything I’ve heard released in ages. Like a hybrid of Scream-era Siouxsie And The Banshees, early X-Mal Deustchland and the first Killing Joke LP, with vocals buried deep in the mix and heavily distorted (think Ramleh’s early post-PE stage), Vom reference a lot of music yet sound nothing like you’ve ever heard. Total intensity and they deserve to be huge; hopefully this will be the first step on the jourey.

Great compliment to the SIF/Mangle single here, this has been coming out for bloody MONTHS but finally arrived and ready to go! Humus are from Italy and play great grind/PV influenced hardcore. It’s what most people these days term “crust” but I’m really loathe to bandy about that term willy-nilly and to me at base the hardcore sound is the one that rises to the fore most prominently. In fact, despite all the continental Euro bands and scenes that a lot of these types of bands take major influence from, I can really hear a strong UKHC sound in this; in fact there’s a Heresy cover (In Silence).

Great HC/grind at a time when there’s a really great crop of bands and a fertile scene going on.

In 1988 – around the time that Saint Vitus were dropped from SST and in a state of flux – legendary frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich joined the LA metal band Lost Breed as their singer for around nine months. During that time they played a bunch of gigs and recorded a demo. Wino then hooked up again with Vitus for the next couple of years and Lost Breed went on to do two albums thanks to Wino’s connection with Hellhound Records of Germany, Save Yourself and The Evil In You And Me.
Anyway, enough of the history lesson. This recording was bootlegged by Marshall Levy/Mars Hall of Doom/Peace Records of Maryland and has never been widely available until now.
Musically Lost Breed are less all-out “doom” than a lot of the Hellhound bands, though they definitely have thier nods to the masters of all, Black Sabbath. Listening to the driving riffing of “Coffin Cheater” and “Soul Chariot” there’s most certainly a heavy Randy Rhoades-era Ozzy/early Quiet Riot influence going on, and Wino’s soulful vocals and lyrics totally set the band apart. These guys have a craft to writing a song that very few bands possess and I’m amazed that they never became huge. The song “Lost Breed” has to be amongst my favourite pieces of music ever recorded, the lyrics and delivery are absolutely 100% what it’s all about for me. “Chosen few, for life we bleed, forever true, a lost breed”.

Whilst I’m a huge fan of Wino and own and love everything he’s ever put his name to, Lost Breed are genuinely one of my favourite bands of all time and every song they ever recorded is genuis as far as I’m concerned, so putting out this record really means a lot to me. This has been a bit of a labour of love and it’s taken such a long time because I wanted it to be the best it could be!

After releasing Uzala’s fantastic debut album some months ago (very few left by the way so get on em now!) I heard a lot of people wondering why the song “Cataract” from their demo hadn’t made it to the final album. Why indeed, for it was my favourite song off the demo! Well, we decided to set that right, so here we go: Cataract on one side and new song “Death Masque” as the double A. The idea for this release really was to help Uzala out with their US tour and also to give an opportunity for all those who pre-ordered the LP to get a special exclusive release. Well, not all those fuckers bought one so the remainder are here and up for grabs now! What does it sound like? Well, if you’ve not heard Uzala yet you must have been living under a rock for the past year, but luckily this is perfect music for the cave-dweller: slow and low doom metal of the highest order with a brilliant ear for melody that few bands master in their lifetime. Essential!

ATWAR048MAURIZIO BIANCHI – Technology 1&2 2xCD

First time ever on CD for these early tapes by one of the most important figures in noise/electronic history, Maurizio Bianchi. These two discs were originally issued on tape in 1981 and have been bootlegged and cut into oblivion since then; this is the first time they’ve been made available digitally and fully uncut. Technology 1 has two long 25 min+ songs, both in a similar vein and showing MB taking a more subtle melodic approach than a lot of his early works; analogue synth and organ combine to make some truly morose but ultimately uplifting music, whilst all the time reminded of the “technology” slant via laser gun blasts, hisses and bleeps. Technology 2 is a little more caustic in its approach: there are no moments of playful organ or robotic beeps, this is a far more barren journey. It brings to mind very much a sense of alienation, like being marooned on some strange, distant planet. Almost like the nigthmare to “Technology 1″s day dream.

I’m incredibly chuffed to be putting out the music of such a legendary figure and very pleased with how this set came together. This is the first in a series of reissues of MB’s early work on CD. *Please note that Technology 1 can also be found (in truncated form) of Vinyl On Demand’s amazing LP boxset MB Archives. I highly recommend seeking it out.

Two tracks each from bands coming at dark heaviness from different ends of the spectrum, but who compliment each other perfectly.
The two Ghast tracks are painfully slow, heavy and unrelentingly repetitive funeral dirges of ultradoom. There are some definite sludge ovetones going on there but this is definitely for fans of bleak doom/sludge: think Moss/Burning Witch/Corrupted etc
Abandoner is Jay and Ryan from Unearthly Trance but this is a different proposition altogether: post-indutrial soundscapes, this is almost like an alternative soundtrack to Eraserhead. Drenched in feedback, almost lost vocals, buzzing, processed guitar all come together in a MASSIVE dark, almost symphonic whole. Total void music.

An excellent pairing (if I do say so myself) of two of the best current old-school death metal bands going right now! I put both these guys on when they did a small tour of Scotland a few years ago in the basement of the Captain’s Rest (when it was a grotty shit-hole and not the crap indie trend-fest PCL-hangout it’s become now) and we were all subjected to a night of total drunken mayhem, these guys really walked it like they talked it! This 7″ came about as a result of those shows and I think really does justice to the Lobosaw live experience like no other release by either band has yet!
Lobotomized start off with Shitting Through Scotland (Hail Gordo Strachan) which is a totally daft but insanely catchy punk/death hybrid about everyone’s favourite (ahem!) funny wee giger football manager. I have to say as a life-long Kilmarnock fan I’d never have imagined I’d be putting out a tribute to Gordon Strachan. Second track is a cover of Abscess’s “The Scent Of Shit” from their first (I think?) demo.
Bonesaw are Scotland’s best death metal band as far as I’m concerned. No fancy-dan overly technical soloing or hard-man posturing, just great, heads-down OLD SCHOOL death metal. This track is total late-period Autopsy worship: it’s got fast parts, sludgy slow parts, and the sound is totally grimy and dirty as fuck but packs a real punch. Basement death!

Absolutely blistering debut recording from one of the most-talked about doom bands of the past year. Uzala represent to me what doom metal has always been and always will be about: absolute, bone-crushing heavy metal thunder supplemented by soaring melody and above all, a knack for writing a good song! This duality of light and shade, darkness and light, beauty and the beast (check out the band pics haha) is what makes this band so special and what always drew me to bands like Saint Vitus, Cathedral, Burning Witch. Take the stoner groove and siren vocals on “The Reaping” and compare to the quasi-Frost riffing and gargoylian cough from Chad Remains on “Fracture”.
The crushing sound is attained by a Blake Green (Wolvserpent) production and mastering by long-time At War cohort Andy Lippoldt of Persistence In Mourning. Amazing artwork by Darcy Nutt and layout and design by Stephen O’Malley.
There seems to be a real renaissance in doom metal at the moment after a long barren period and I reckon Uzala could be a real spearhead of the movement. Buy or die!

Collaborative effort between Torba of Italy (who I must admit not being familiar with until this release) and harsh noise wall legend Vomir.
On the first side Torba takes the fore: his scraping metal trash collapses down Vomir’s crumbling static walls. Torba has a HNW-approach to his noise in that the sounds on here don’t really go anywhere; it ends abruptly just as it came in. The second side has the harsh Vomir wall really to the fore, with piercing insect noise scraping away at it constantly.
A top collaboration and glad to get a new Vomir release out after a wee while. Look out for the book/CD coming very soon!!

Combining the super-fuzz garage sensibilities of Davie Allen And The Arrows and the catchy riffing and keen sense of songwriting of the “new” Electric Wizard, Satan’s Satyrs have injected a youth breath of fresh air into the oft staid confines of the crypt of underground metal this past year or so through a series of ultra-limited singles and EPs. Wild Beyond Belief! is the first full-length and delivers on the promise of those early demos and then some.
I got chatting with Clay of SS a wee while back over a mutual love of late 60s biker movies, and they really form the basis of this record; from the artwork and the lyrics (“Ride Devils, ride, ride Sadist 69!”) to the lo-fi recording sounding like it could’ve come straight from a greasy backstreet Grindhouse showing Hell’s Angels On Wheels. There are no boring “drone” elements here, there’s no chin-stroking/beards anywhere in sight, and the exploitation schlock element has a firm basis rather than some clown who watched Susperia cos Electric Wizard said they liked it and Googled “occult flares lol” in search of an album cover. It’s just TUNES and ATTITUDE. Right on!

The best release yet of amazing noise rock from this Finnish beast! After the superb debut “Good Times” tape and the short, sharp blast of scuzzy, fuzzy monster rock that was the “Adult Situations” 7″ (which is still available by the way), Throat presents a longer, more sprawling vision of sluge depravity here. There’s something very eerie, disonant about the songs here that gives it a real sinister and bleak edge to it. If you like Brainbombs, Fudge Tunnel, Tad, 16 and Unsane then Throat may just be your new favourite band.

First ever release on vinyl from the UK’s most pummeling and heavy band, Black Sun. Having not let up in the past few years with several albums and having worked with notable producers such as Billy Anderson and James Plotkin, Black Sun come out of left-field with their most fully-formed body of work thus far, a raging statement of intent that doesn’t let up or fail to engage from the opening guttural screams to the final thunderous crash.

The first track “Prison Of The Cross” takes up the entire A-side, starting off as a SWANS-esque lesson in harsh rhythmical battery, before a beautiful lull featuring Glasgow drone wizard Noma on keys, after which we go into a sort of post-Neurosis chorus which shows Black Sun at their most melodic, before reverting to a raging finale which has a vaguely mid-90s metalcore sound. Amazing!

The second side is compositionally more similar to previous album “Hour Of The Wolf”; “Hammer The Nails” has a very sub-industrial feel to it – cold and muscular – with the remix stripping the track to its bare bones and highlighting its pounding, rhythmic monotony. The whole side is very stylistically similar to Godflesh’s “Slavestate” in both sound and execution. This is a good thing.

Drenched Lands is a beautifully thought-out piece of music, from a gentle guitar strum/synth opening (not a million miles away from Culver/Earth “Pentastar”-era territory) which cuts out abruptly just as you’re becoming entirely engrossed, only to give way to an epic cavernous drone. The whole thing brings to mind some sort of disused industrial factory or barren post-apocalyptic landscape. Dark tones, noise, keys and the odd well-placed guitar strum combine brilliantly to evoke feeling of desolation, loss, a submission of will….it’s almost like the logical conclusion of Neil Young’s Dead Man soundtrack; almost tangiential in sound to Earth’s recent(ish) “Hex” record.

This duality of light and shade, darkness and light, beauty and the beast (check out the band pics haha) is what makes this band so special and what always drew me to bands like Saint Vitus, Cathedral, Burning Witch. I’ve been following Hey Collosus sice they first started and it’s a real honour to have them on the label. As usual, they don’t do things straight, and what we have here is a slo-mo cover of Andre Williams’ Jailbait, battered into submission by HC’s trademark downbeat dirge. The Blues on downers.
Field Boss are bloody brilliant. The band previously known as Tractor have been knockig around for a few years but this is their first “proper” release. It reminds me a lot of early Unsane; they’ve got that Am-Rep sound down to an absolute tee, really thick guitars, monotonous, hollowed-out drum sound and in-the-red vocals pushed down in the mix. I can hear the first Fudge Tunnel record (surely one of the most overlooked albums ever?!) in there as well. “I got a headache on my birthday”. Fits it perfectly, brilliant!

Andre Foisy and Terence Hannum have spent the last several years honing the Locrian sound. They’ve taken elements from noise, power electronics, drone, and black metal to come up with a truly unique sound reflecting the sprawling urban decay surrounding them in Chicago. After nearly two dozen releases, they’ve found themselves in the world of Territories. For this release, Locrian has pulled out all the stops and fleshed out the band with the help of Mark Solotroff (Bloodyminded, Anatomy of Habit) on vocals and synthesizers, Blake Judd (Nachtmystium) on guitar, Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) on saxophone and vocals, and Andrew Scherer (Velnias) on drums. The results of this massive collaborative effort are apparent from the moment the album starts. The textures run darker and deeper; the vocals-sometimes three layers deep-seem to be conjured from the decrepit muck of a failed civilization; the feedback takes on a more pronounced presence; and the big band allows for full-on black metal assaults that burst out of the tortured drones Locrian have come to be known for. Truly a case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, Territories may well be the most fully realized form of Locrian’s dystopic vision.

These guys are getting a real name for themselves in the metal underground and this is a statement of intent that justifies that! This is some of the most filthy, disgusting stuff I’ve ever heard; one long track that goes from all-out black metal fuzz to passages of total low-end DOOM to seriously disturbed ambient passages, all sounding like it was recorded on somebody’s walkman in a dungeon somewhere. 20-odd minutes of totally harrowing bleakness. True Belgian nihilism!!

Aunt Mary’s last record was a split 7″ with Man Is The Bastard 18 years ago. I am beyond chuffed to be putting out the first material since then by what I consider to be the greatest noisecore band of them all. I’ve always been pretty vocal about my love for this band and have forced many a poor lughole into being abused by the first 7″!

To the music! TOTAL NOISECORE. Very basic drum beats (sounds like it was played with some pipes on a couple of industrial tanks), feedback, wailing guitar, brutal vocals, all utterly maxed-out. I’m not sure if it’s a series of very short songs or one big long track starting and stopping. It doesn’t really matter! There’s a moment when a “proper” drum beat kicks in and an amazing mid-paced guitar riff comes out of nowhere – not too dissimilar to early AxCx – that just had me pumping my fist in the air in glee. Heavy fucking metal (!?) Seriously the best single I might ever put out! Co-release with Turgid Animal.

For Vomir there is nothing, and this is how he makes that statement. It’s an ugly listen for sure, but well worth the effort. Regular edition in normal jewel case.

First vinyl outing from this French/German Glasgow-based duo who have consistently blown me away with their brilliant live performances in the past couple of years.

This record translates BSBF’s contagious live set perfectly: at the forefront total overdriven guitar scree, feedback, heavily-effected vocal distortion and brain-pummelling drum machine. Often it seems to become a complete noise free-for-all but every so often BSBF manage a moment of cohesion – a great groove – that’s missing from so many noise bands aiming to “out-noise” each other. The cover photo says it all, as do the garish day-glo sleeves. Probably the most head-nodding noise release I’ve put out yet, could be a good companion piece (antidote?) to the Vomir record.

The Austrasian Goat’s side reminds me a lot of the last Corrupted record (you know, the one where they went all emo). Ok, I’m being more than a little facetious there, but there’s a real driving feel to it – powered by a brilliantly melodic guitar line over a plodding bass riff. Everything’s recdorded totally in the red and there’s a wonderful layer of white noise over everything. Maybe the best AG side yet saved for the last single!
Having put out the last Habsyll recording and aware of the scale of their music, I was a bit worried about how they would translate to the 7″ format. I needn’t have worried as they managed to cram all the elements of what made their debut album so good into 6 minutes of wax. Opening up with a scream there’s a lot of wailing down-tuned guitar before the wall of heavy hits. So far, so Khanate! It all comes together really well though and is a crushingly claustrophobic listen, especially as it just seems to cut off with no natural end. Great stuff.

Over six years since it was recorded this forgotten masterpiece of extreme hardcore is finally released! Utterly single-minded in its relentless brutality, this is one of the most focussed, hateful records I’ve ever heard.
This is not the noise Haters that most people would expect At War to be relasing but a short-lived band featuring three members of the Voorhees lineup that cut the classic “Spilling Blood Without Reason” LP from 1994. Haters is a different beast though, taking influence from Brainbombs, maybe even early wave power electronics, but channelling it through the Negative Approach wringer, which results in some utterly hideous stuff. Songs are short, sharp shocks that get straight to the point and the album’s over 14 tracks later, not at one point letting up for a second. “Kill And Fuck Angels”, “Sadist Fuck”, “We’ve Got The Power” say it all really…probably not recommended listening for the faint of heart/easilly offended.
I’m very chuffed with how this record came out and very happy to be part of its release. Some may percieve it to be a bit of a sidestep from the usual At War trajectory but those people would be missing the point entirely, because stuff like this the reason I started the label in the first place and will keep it going for several years to come!

A monotonous single slow beat is violently interjected by a savage, noisy, razor-sharp black metal assault; there’s a noisecore feel to it too I reckon. Brutal stuff!

    Another week, another Sloth split! What the hell do I care, they’re one of my favourite bands and I’ve yet to hear anything they’ve come up with that I don’t love. This is ostensibly one track by them (but sounds like it’s in three parts?!), bass-heavy and menacing with some bizarre vocals. I played it to a friend recently who said it sounded like Sesame Street gone wrong. A reasonably prescient point methinks.
    Weluvpot do loads of songs on their side, they sound like Sloth if Sloth had even worse recording equipment and weren’t able to play their instruments very well. That’s not a criticism, this is some ace fucked-up nonsense! ULTRA lofi noisecore/grind….dunno if it could accurately even be described as that, is just a total mess. Love it, hope to hear a lot more from these guys!

    Just over 20 minutes each from both of these UK heavy-hitters, all recorded live. Seppuku start off with a psychy doom jam, at odds with the usual aggressive raped-cat vocals you’ve come to know and hate. Second track is dominated by a clunky heavy metal bass riff, very slow and borderline bluesy sludge-esque. Slow, tar-pit doom. USI’s side is a whole live show, where seemingly everyone involved in the Newcastle scene got on stage and smashed up whatever they could get their hands on. At root is a repetitive Xaman riff loop, and it sounds like everything else is slowly burning in the background. By the middle of the track this has taken a back seat to a horrible hiss with some vicious screams in the background. Lofi as hell and utterly fucking amazing! It’s a real shame this band don’t get the attention they deserve, brilliant stuff.

    ATWAR046PERSISTENCE IN MOURNING – The Undead Shall Rise LP

    First full-length album from Andy Lippoldt AKA Persistence In Mourning, after a couple of EPs and a split 7″ with funeral doom legends Worship. The Undead Shall Rise is a concept album on a zombie attack, following our protagonist on fleeing the zombie hordes on the A side (which ends with him being bitten), and deals with his transformation into an undead on the B side. It’s a hokey concept, but does it work? YES IT DOES! There’s a real soundtrack feel to the record, with funeral doom dirges interspersed with noisey, unsettling moments and fractured spoken word. Reminiscent of doom legends Thergothon on the more “conventional” pieces, but in my opinion the stuff he’s doing on this record is a million miles ahead of anyone in the genre right now. It’s a very downbeat record and captures the spirit of utter hopelessness and despair (what I can only assume the “zombie” concept is allegory for) perfectly. Features a host of guest musicians (including Ganzmord, M. Warjomaa from Aarni and B.Baphomet from By The Horns) who serve to each stamp their own unique talents onto the music. Proud as hell to be unleashing this on the world, this is one of my favourite At War releases yet.

TAG start things off with three tracks all based around the concept of WAR, split up with some conversation in french that I don’t understand. The tracks are really fast and raw, pretty old school black metal and maybe not what some people would expect. Brings to mind a slightly more musically adept Ildjarn. Afflictis Lentae hail from France also and their side starts off with the sound of machine gunning, which seems to continue through the whole song….totally brutal black metal battery; again, all volume turned up as far in the red as possible, total hell for leather stuff.

    Two discs of incredibly minimal non-shifting tone from Lubyanka. The music is based on the Suprematist art movement, and particularly focussing on Malevich’s “Black Square”. Ultimately minimal, the first disc (3″) is an unsettling low throbbing tone with utterly no variation; the second “black” disc is a more harsh static robotic tread, white noise digitised crunching against a harsh noise wall bass backdrop. Warning: NOT easy listening!

I find it difficult to describe the sheer brutality of either the concept of Vomir’s music or indeed the sound of the music itself. It’s long, it does not change, and it leaves me with a feeling of intense loss and depression afterward. Truly some of the most powerful music I know. For Vomir there is nothing, and this is how he makes that statement. It’s an ugly listen for sure, but well worth the effort.

    Here we have two of the leading lights of the HNW scene, Vomir from France and Concrete Threat from Sweden. Vomir side is a very oppressive, suffocating wall; Concrete Threat seems to have a greater level of dynamism (is that the right word? Probably not!) and is equally as much of an endurance test. At around 20 minutes a piece, this is relatively “wall light” but still packs a mighty punch. All hail the new breed!

    ATWAR036GNAW THEIR TONGUES – The Genocidal Deliverance 7″

    First time on 7″ for this black metal beast! Whilst the last release I did for Gnaw Their Tongues was very Abruptum-esque crypt-dwelling, chain-clanking noise, this release sees Mories go for a more “traditional” – if that can ever be said of GTT – black metal approach. Fast and raw as fuck but with some great melodies going on, there’s even a trad metal wail on the A side. It’s got the same basement production you’ll be used to, reminds me a little of a really under-produced and less technically-adept Marduk circa-“Heaven Shall Burn…”. Side B “Dead Bird Prophecies” starts off with some cryptic looping samples then goes straight for the jugular with a complete mess of drums and total black guitar, a total blown-out savage disaster. It all culminates in a chorus of wailing guitar solo, noise and shrieking vocal before settling on a weird keyboard line and some spoken word before all going mental again. Amazing!

    New 7″ that I’m incredibly chuffed about! Sharing a split 7″ with one of my favourite bands is the highlight of doing all this stuff so far, could only be eclipsed by maybe Maiden letting me go on tour with them, or perhaps Peter Gabriel playing some flute on our next record. Anyway, I digress. Seven short tracks of weirdness from Sloth; creepy, odd atmosphere to these and in a similar vein to the more obtuse approach of recent EPs they’ve been coming out with. Some great sub-stoner riffs in there and some ridiculously high-pitched screaming going on. Another winner. One long, claustrophobic and ultra-heavy track from Seppuku, not a million miles away from the recent split 7″ with Mutant Ape, but more cohesive. Snails-pace riffing, unholy sarcophagus shrieks and sub-bass low-end. All in tribute to one of the most amazing women ever, Lina Romay.

    When they’re not bombing the shit out of small countries or pissing off the international community in general, Russia excels in making some of the most weird, off-the-wall noise currently around. VDVZH make some of the most painful, out-of-tune, ridiculously over-the-top and frankly brilliant noise I’ve ever heard. My good friend Phil Monopolka put out a tape by these guys a wee while ago and this is like that but multiplied by ten….nearly EIGHTY MINUTES of random smashing, guitar abuse, drums being thrown about, screaming……I think these things happen but it’s difficult to tell. There’s a vaguely noisecore element to it all but it sounds much less “focussed”…and by that I mean it could have been recorded by a bunch of tramps who’d happened upon some amplifiers in an alley after sniffing some glue and downing a couple of four litre bottles of White Lighting. Totally recommended if yer a fan of, say, “Instruments Disorder”. Which happily I consider amongst the greatest things ever recorded. “Every gig is a dis-ass-terrr”. Too fucking right!

    Oversize card sleeves, stick-on artwork, some sage information on the album, and a picture of a guy’s arsehole on the CD face. What more do you want? 100 copies.

      A new limited CDr from the current main man of torturous, necrotic black noise, Gnaw Their Tongues. This is some of his most noisy, “anti musical” stuff to date, all jangling chains, old samples of torture victims, cold synth and total NECROMATICAL SCREAMS. It reminds me a lot of Abruptum, but not quite as minimalistic. Whilst not overtly black metal in terms of sound, the aesthetic and general sense of utter misanthropy is abundantly clear. A perfect companion piece to his more “mainstream” releases. These won’t stay around long so get ’em while you can!!

      First foray into the world of vinyl and it’s a belter if I do say so myself!! The incredibly busy George Proctor smashes us across the chops for the duration of his side of this slab with a punishing six minute lesson in harsh noise brutality. It sounds like a large collection of faulty electric appliances being launched down the stairs of a building on fire. Fucking GREAT! On the flipside is a couple of tracks by the band formerly known as TETSUO. This side sees a change of direction from the previous lo-fi clatterings of before and contains two mercilessly heavy tracks of full-on noise doom!! First track, “The Sound Of Slow Decay” does exactly what it says on the tin…repetitive sub-Sabbath riffing which eventually kills itself, followed by “Vincent Price’s Wife Is Dead”, which sounds like a hokey 70s nightmare sequence from a Hammer film gone wrong.

      Stick-on laser printed sleeves and a confusing insert that doesn’t really shed much light on anything. BLACK VINYL, 220 copies. This is a corelease with Turgid Animal and can also be bought from www.turgid-animal.co.uk

      First (I think?!) record from this horrible meeting of the two unstable minds of Lee Stokoe (Culver) and George Proctor (Mutant Ape). This comes across very much as a great sum of parts from this pair: vacuous tunnels of stasis and repetitive crumbling walls of horrific noise assault. It all sounds a bit like the beginning of Terminator II, y’know, when the big tank things are crushing the MOUNTAINS OF SKULLS. To quote Donald Tardy of Obituary: heavier than a bag of donkey’s balls.
      Completely at odds with the holocaustal music contained within, this is packaged in sickeningly garish covers drawn by Tisbor in my kitchen as the cabinet collapsed on top of me. Bright yellow vellum backs and full colour Girls Aloud tribute CDrs! 100 copies.

ATWAR028PANTHER MODERN – Salem CDr

    First release (hopefully of many!) by this amazing new band from the US. I got this through the door one day a few months ago and was utterly blown away by how totally powerful and blistering it was. Three tracks of completely bleak, unrelenting and totally innovative harsh black noise! There are some terrific moments of tension as everything boils down to a low simmer, before once again the high- end kicks in and pummels yer napper into submission. There’s a rather ambiguous Satanic theme running through this and there’s a genuinely weird and truly unsettling undercurrent to the whole thing. Bang on the second track and you’ll see what I mean: distorted synth (?!) tones, echoed, unintelligible samples, cut through with the odd “Erector”-style ultra high-frequency laser blast. Properly disturbing music.


    In keeping with the tone of the piece, image for the front artwork taken from “Cthulu” by Austin Spare (the original of which I had the pleasure of viewing a couple of months ago in Glasgow!); wrap-around black half-sleeve, back parchment insert, fully printed CDr. 100 copies.

ATWAR027DEATH FACTORY/MESSIAH COMPLEX – Split Cassette

    Around 30 minutes a piece from this pairing of like-minded post-industrial pessimists from Chicago and Bathgate respectively. Mike Kraus AKA Death Factory gives us four tracks of very varied noise/ambient. There are a lot of different styles going on here, from straight-up harsh-head attack to weird flanger effects, more often than not all amalgamating into a sorta “noise orchestra” crescendo. A lot’s went into this and repeated listens really yield something new every time. Supoib! Messiah Complex’s side is a little more typical of their sound than than ominous dark ambience of their previous At War release, “Meniscus”. This untitled track builds up from a crackling oscillation to full on blazing static fire and a wailing feedback chorus. It waxes and wanes through solid rumbling noise wall and loud as fuck, in-yer-skull post power electronic battery! These guys are quietly plying their trade and putting out some great releases on many respectable noise labels. Keep an eye out!


    Some of my favourite At War packaging yet! All cassettes come in static shielding bags with double-sided insert/black stickered cassettes, all sealed with a wee sticker.     These guys slayed Glasgow when they came last year and these new recordings are even better! Two mini CDrs, two new lengthy songs by this Anglo-Canadian drums/guitar duo currently residing in Tokyo, Japan! First disc “Ikeburo Incinerator” is a total Jap-psych instrumental blowout, completely wild and unrestrained. The title of this track seems pertinent, in that it sounds like it was recorded in a sweaty room with no fucking way out. Second disc – “Your Love Is A Fucking Drag” is more of an early 90s AmRep-style jam, yet feels more considered. Brilliant caustic lyrics and shredding screams give way to an over-the-top instrumental crescendo, all heaving guitar and clattering drum wizardry. Really happy to be releasing this, some might think this is more “musical” than the usual At War stuff, but this is still as in-your-face and NOISE as anything else.
    Printed double mini-CDrs in nice “indestructible” double CD cases, with mounted thick-stock card inserts on brown paper.

Some great tunes going on here; eight minute-plus “Now You Know” is amazing; low-fi percussives and what sounds like some spanish guitar? Great ritual music nonetheless that comes as a big surprise and my only disappointment is it’s not longer. Another companion piece will be coming soon on At War, cannae wait!

    Snotnosed has become a bit of a legend in recent years. Born as a “tribute” of sorts to Jap trash noise legends Hanatarashi/Hanatarash, this duo went about demolishing several venues of northern England (and often themselves) with as little care for the consequences as their Japanese counterparts did in the 80s. What we have here is a collection of live sets as well as remixed/remastered “studio” tracks which originally appeared on Traqueto Records’ “Surrounding” complilation. Nothing can compare to the total destructive onslaught that was Snotnosed live but these recordings are the next best thing!!
    Painstakingly packaged in yellow card covers, with a full colour CDr (pink, green or yellow), a green Snotnosed pin badge, and a twelve-page booklet, featuring live reviews, previously unseen photos, “An Oral History Of Snotnosed”, liner notes and track info. Amazing stuff!!

Debut album from sometime Tetsuo member Rejectamenta!! Total robotic psychosis; there’s far too much going on here to even begin to describe it after just a few listens. Adam Cresser is a total genius of circuit-bent electronics and his mastery is on full display here. It’s amazing to hear a “noise” album that’s actually been thought out – nay, COMPOSED – that you can in fact hum along to. Well, maybe not. Either way, this is totally intense stuff and I’m not over-emphasising when I say this is up there with the finest examples of the genre I’ve ever heard. Whilst there are so many noise artists out there today who release 50+ albums in a year, it’s refreshing to hear one who actually puts in a massive amount of time, work and effort to make something that just sounds devestating. Buy or die!!
There are two different versions of this record; I had initially only intended on putting out 50 since the metal cases were so expensive, but I’ve since decided to make an unlimited “regular edition” which is a lot cheaper but contains exactly the same music. It’s up to you what one you want to buy.

Packaged in a metal DVD-sized tin, hand engraved on the front, with shiny silver CDrs. Expensive but these cost a fortune to buy and will cost a fortune to mail due to the weight! 50 copies.

Finally the new Noma album is unleashed! I’m massively chuffed with this one; everything about this release is why I decided to start At War in the first place!
Double album set that shows two distinct sides to the wonderful and often frightening world of Noma; the first disc “Lacrimosa” features one long piece built up with layered harmonium and drones which slowly envelop the listener. As Dylan Carlson said, “…a physical presence in the room…I can almost touch the sounds”. The second disc, “Nidus” collects a bunch of more “noise”-style shorter tracks built around heavily-manipulated found sounds, vocals, and field recordings. In contrast to the first disc, lots going on and really benefits from repeated listens.

I’m very chuffed to be releasing this as Noma gets nothing like the credit he deserves when there are a lot more unoriginal acts doing the rounds right now being praised by the usual clueless journo-types just cos their face fits. Highly recommended!

One lengthy track from then two-piece improv punk dicks Tetsuo partly recorded live in a manic performance in Aberdeen last summer. Inhuman screams, jazz drumming, samples from old Toshihiro Mifune films and some J-pop to finish it off. What more do you want?
The other three tracks come from Japanese Blondie tribute band BRONDIE, recorded in rehearsal space in Kanazawa, Ishikawa in 2004. Fucking ace!!

Chuffed to be reissuing one of the greatest cult death metal demos of all time! Necro Schizma were arguably the first band to play properly slow death metal.

They took “Triumph Of Death” as a template (it’s covered here), and the songs on this demo are essentially variations on that very basic theme; played incredibly primitively at snail’s pace.

This is rough-sounding stuff, and shows little musical flair at all, but for me this is an absolute godhead of early extreme metal and encapsulates everything those early scenes were about: paying homae to your heroes (the cover is even just photocoied from the sleeve of the first Angel Witch 7″!), recording and releasing music yourself with a distinct aesthetic, and capturing an atmosphere that is almost impossible to do nowadays.

This demo has been re-released a few times in the past few years on vinyl and CD, but I don’t think the artwork has come close to doing the justice of capturing the original home-made aesthetic in any way at all. This tape reissue is based on my own original copy of the tape and (I hope!) is a near-exact replica of the original. Maintain the sanctity of the classics!
